Forrest Gump 9

Hi all

I have a 97 4runner Limited. It's my first 4x4. I have a little questions about the 4x4 lever. Where should I leave the lever? Should it be in H all the time, or should I leave it in N? As off right now I have it in H, I bought the truck with the 4x4 lever in H. Sorry for the noob question.

Owner's Manual would be the best answer, but likely H = High range = 1:1 gearing and is what you normally want to use. N is likely Neutral and is just that, no gearing at all, likely the truck will not move in that position. Probably has a L for Low range, where you are geared way down, maybe 2:1 or lower and your top speed would be about 30 MPH.

you have 2WD High, Neutral, 4WD High, and 2WD Low. For street driving, it needs to be in 2WD High. If you put it in neutral, the truck will not drive, it will be the same as putting the transmission in neutral.

If you put the transfer case in neutral, not only will the truck not move under it's own power, but it might roll down a hill. Park doesn't work with the transfer case in neutral. You'll want to use your ebrake if you do that.

You shouldn't have a 4WD... Check out your owners manual and take a second to educate yourself. I would also take a day and learn how to shift your transfer case before you actually need to use it. You should engage your 4wd drive once a month and drive a little ways to keep things up front lubricated.

N stands for Nimble. It will make your truck run fast and smooth!

At least he posted this in the newbie section and on Yotatech....can you imagine what the guys at TTORA or Pirate would have said..oh lord it would have caused a riot. Seems like a lot of questions being asked lately that would easily be answered by people reading their owners manuals before asking silly questions to 20,000 people online.

Put some 250W-450 gear oil in 'er, put 'er in N and jam that skinny. She'll move like no other!
