4wd not engaging

taco 2004 v6, with stick 4wd
checked add @ transfer case and it will engage when i apply ground direct. 4wd will work great and 4wd light comes on until i disengage and then try to engage again. Then no 4wd & no light at dash

checked archives, checked fuse, checked ground from 4wd computer
relay is clicking @ passenger side, vacum lines are good

It has been to cold to miss with it but I am suspecting maybe a bad position switch at transfer case? anyone have a part # for this . I believe it should have continuity when button on switch is pushed in.

Read this thread to give you some ideas. Though it is directed to 4Runners for the most part, it may be these switches acting up for you as well. Could be your transfer indicator switch. 84222-12010 , or 84222-35070 for the front diff

interesting thread - thx

The symptom most mentioned in that thread was a flashing/blinking 4wd light.
My 4wd light does not work at all, although could still be the problem.

It seems there are two possible problems: the transfer case switch & the front differential sensor. Are there any pics on these? I think the transfer case switch is bad #84222-12010 as the differential sensor seems to only work when 4wd is engaged which then lights up the dash but in my case 4wd is not engaging .

Anyone have a diagram showing the location of senor and switches on 2004 ?

it is not the switch or sensor and seems to be a bad ground as when i apply a good ground to the add it kicks on for a brief time until i shift out of 4wd.

typhoon55,

Last night I emailed you the pictures of the 4WD system. Let me know if you need anything else.

yes thx doug
they were not for a 2004 taco so I believe would not apply?

anyway, i found a ground point diagram which shows the ground going to the ADD limit switch is coming from the L4 position switch with a connector in-between which i am hoping is the problem. It could be a dirty connector that is stopping ground from getting to the ADD limit switch.
