4Runner/tacoma 3rd members interchangeable?

Hey just bought a high mileage but clean 96 Tacoma extended cab a few months back. Sold my 05 TRD double cab, payed off some debt, and bought this rig. Now I'm at a point where I'm actually thinking of possibly selling my FJ40 too. But if I do that I'll want to build up my 96 a bit (or buy another double cab to build up) and it doesn't have a rear locker. Thanks to Toyota buying back most of the pre-00 Tacoma's around here due to frame rust there are hardly any in salvage yards. But lots of 4Runners. Anyone ever use a 4Runner locking 3rd member in a Tacoma? I've got 4.10's and I think most of the 4Runners had 4.10's also.

Are you certain you have 4.10's ?
I thought only the e-locked axles had that ratio.
What is your axle code?

4.10s pretty much come in every flavor of toyota diffs.

You will need a taco elocker axle housing to run an elocker. You can't modify a non elocker taco housing to fit an elocker.

You could also get a 3rd gen elock axle and convert to leafs, or an older toy 8" axle and convert to elocker.

Yes I'm positive it has 4.10's. Saw the invoice for all the diff rebuild parts put in it 2 months before I bought the truck. My last 3 1st gen tacomas all had 4.10's too. Seems pretty common on V6 trucks with factory 31" tires. I'm a bit doubtful on the housing comment though. After previously owning both a 3rd gen 4Runner and a 1st gen Tacoma with an elocker it appears everything pertaining to the locker is in the 3rd member. I'm just wondering if the 3rd member from a 4Runner will work in a Tacoma? Even if I don't sell the 40 I still may want an elocker because either way I'll be putting a snowplow on the 96. Traction is good when plowing. Especially on my driveway.

People have been able to modify the non e-locker housing to fit an e-locker into. Seen it done a few times now. A little grinding, drilling and tapping of the old housing to make it fit.

I believe only the manual trans V6 3rd gen 4Runners are 4.10 ratio. The V6 automatics have 4.30 ratio.

Well apparently my assumption about the housing was incorrect. Ok though I can weld, drill, and tap no problem. Here's the 40.

I've been on the fence about selling it for a few years. It rarely gets driven besides in and out of my shop to work on other stuff and an occasional trip across town. 12 mpg and a 90 mile a day commute don't mix too well. But i've had it for 12-13 years and did a complete frame off 10 years ago. Even though I never drive it and could use the money it's tough to think of not having it.

Edit: after reading that page fully it looks like I can't do this. Makes me wish I hadn't cut up that extra 94 axle housing I had to make a rear wheel bearing tool! Oh well I could always just get a lsd carrier for my diff if I have traction issues. Unless I sell the 40 I doubt the 96 will see any real off road use.
