4Runner Intake modification, and something else...

Hi Guys, this is my first post here, but I've lurked for a while, I love all the great info you guys share, so thanks alot

But, I have a question. I learned about the 'deckplate' mod from you guys here (go figure), and I'm getting ready to do it. Now, I have an idea, and I'm not as knowledgable as most of you guys, but I'm working on it, so I'm looking for feedback.

My 4runner is a 2000, 6cyl, 5 spd. (best combination possible in my opinion ) I've got 104k miles on it, and I love it to death.

Its also the 'Sport' model, so it has the color matched bumbers, fender flares, etc. It also has the non functional hood scoop, that looks really cool but serves no real purpose....yet.

I'm sure you've guess where I'm going with this.

The scoop just ends in a plastic bucket deal on the underside of the hood, it would be VERY easy to open this up. Now, here's where the question comes in. If I open this up, it generally means more air in the engine compartment, more cold air for the intake to get to....so in theory, better. Right? Now, my concern is the obvious stuff; all the stuff thats going to get forced into the engine compartment - dust, rain, bugs, etc. It has a little grill on it, so I wont be sucking up any small birds, but its by no means a filter of any sort.

So, there you have it, what do you guys think? Thanks in advance, and I'm glad to be part of this community.

I've thought about opening mine up just to reduce the under hood temperature. Other than that, the scoop is simply bling.

So do you think that there would be any ill effects as far as stuff getting in? I mean, I've had pretty much my whole engine coated with mud on a couple occaisions before...but I dunno.

its fine to take it off, unless you do some really nasty wheeling the muds not going to get in it too mcu... and if it does will just clog it up or coat whatever is under it inside.....

The scoop was used for an intercooler on the turbo-intercooled diesel sold every else from what I understand. If we had an international source for parts, we could order the factory open piece for a nice look.

ok. I was going to make another thread, but I already have one, so I decided to just post in this one. I've been reading through the instructions for removing the intake silencer, and tommorrow I'm going to try to get the parts to do it. But what is the tube that comes off of the silencer for?
