4runner clutch return spring, stiff clutch

Is a return spring required for the clutch pedal to return?

I took out the torsion spring and replaced it with a extension spring from a local hardware store.

Clutch pedal was stiff with torsion spring and extension spring.

I removed the extension spring and clutch pedal is a little softer and clutch pedal returns normally.

Is this normal?

clutch and pressure plate were replaced a year ago along with slave cylinder and a rebuilt master cylinder.

your clutch master cylinder will return the pedal for you.

Thanks, so why do people put the extension spring on after the removal of the torsion spring?

Preference. I am running a linear spring after taking out the torsion spring. It is a little firmer with the spring than without. I prefer that.
