4 cylinder pickups suck????
i'm looking at buying my first toyota pickup and dont know much about them...its a 94 with the 22re, seems pretty gutless.....how do they do offroad?...are there any common problems with them?...it has 85,000 on it...not sure if i want it...any comments would help

I can't tell you much about them but I do remember reading somewhere that the Toyota pickup 4 cyl. will last forever as long as you take good care of it.

The 22RE is a fantastic engine. Not a powerhouse, but will run forever with a little TLC. My 1st Celica had one & I sold that car with 165,000 miles on it. The only problems I had were a broken timing chain guide and leaky water pump. They're easy to work on and there are tons of parts and upgrades available. I don't know of any problems specific to the 94's or the 22RE's, but I'm sure someone here does (if there are problems).

Replace the timing chain in another 15,000-20,000 miles.

Seriously. 85K miles on it is not much. Especially a 22RE engine. Yeah it's gutless, but it has plenty of torque for off road situations. It's not going to be a sports car! If you can live with that, you'll be okay. It's also a very good off road vehicle out of the box, and there are numerous mods you can do to take you anywhere you want to go.
4 cylinders don't suck!

I agree, that is a great engine. There are some tricks to push a bit more power out of it. Like someone said, it will never be a powerhouse (unless you get really crazy) but it will get you there and back reliably.
First thing I would do is improve the breathing. Intake/Header/Exhaust. I believe you have to tweak the 22RE's MAFS or VFM (I cant remember which it has) if you significantly increase the air flow or it will run lean.
Kinda depends on your needs.

IMHO the 4 cylinder is a great engine.
I owned a 95 Toyota Pickup until I bought my 4Runner.
It was great off road. Never spun a tire and never got
stuck.
I loved the gas mileage and with a 5-spd was plenty
peppy.
In a small pickup get it.

My 1990 pickup with the 22RE has just over 210,000 miles on it. With a Downey exhaust and a K&N FIPK I find it has more than enough power on and off road, gets 27 MPG with stock street tires, and has needed no major work. The clutch I replaced two weeks ago was the most expensive fix I've done to the truck.

wow...this sounds good...hopefully i will be approved to get the loan for the truck...its a 94 reg cab pickup with the 22re...85000 miles and is in decent shape....its never been taken off road and was owned by an old man and a lady.....little spot of surface rust...hes asking 4800 but i think i could buy for about 4300...is that a pretty good deal?....what does everyone think?....if i get it what should i do first?...its going to be my everyday driver but i plan to take it off road at least once a week...nothing to tough just play in the dirt a bit....i plan to buy all terrain tires, but what next?...thanks for the tips guys!

Old people are the best to buy from! No abuse from streetracing. First thing you can do is go to the tech section, modify your airbox, check the plugs, and if they are no good get some NGK's. Also you can replace your filter with a K&N or Amsoil, depending on who's advice you want to to take. Some say Amsoils are much better at filtering out dust while maintaining performance. I dunno When you replace that timing chain guide, you could throw in a cam at the same time, if you wanted to. Also, Downy offers headers, along with LC Engineering.

I had a 94 reg cab 4x4 with the 4cyl and it was awesome. i've never needed to drag race the thing so it had plenty of power for me. just be good to yours and it will last a long time.

i loved my 22re! i wish i still had it. i had 200k on it and it ran like brand new. it wasnt a big power maker but likes to rev and i could run mine up to the 110mph governer whenever i wanted. of coarse it was a 2wd...thats a nice lookin truck, buy it and keep it forever

The 22 series motor is what "made" Toyota IMHO.. It is a great motor and it can be pushed in a build up to be just as powerfull if not moreso than the 3.0

my truck has a 20R in it, but my old pickup had a 22r and the motors are almost exactly the same. VERY reliable. my current truck has over 300,000 miles on the clock, and the original motor has never been rebuilt, it still runs great! my only grip is with towing, and going up steep hills on the road, as it is a 4 cylinder after all and will bog down. definitely great offroad though, lots of torque and combined with your low range in the tcase is pretty much unstoppable off road

I still love my 22RE, 186k and I'll never get rid of it.
I run 33's w/stock gears. DOA cam, timing chain guides, injectors balanced by RC Engineering, Amsoil Two Stage Air filter etc.
Not a V8 but it takes me everywhere I want to go...

22RE = Ultimate reliability, like most Toyota stuff! My old 94 PU w/ a 22re had 150k on it before some dude killed it:cry: Never had a problem, in fact when I went shopping around for a new truck I looked for an older truck w/ a 22re. Hence the 87 4runner, engine had 134k when I bought it. Just took a trip up to Canada in it and added about 4800 miles to the odometer and it never hick up'd once!!! I am so impressed with it that I plan to replace the engine w/ the exact same, if it ever dies! It is true that it's no power plant (there are fixes for this), but you can't beat the milage... 24mpg on the average As far as I'm concerned it has great torque for the mucky stuff and plenty o power for the other stuff. Get it! get it! you won't regret it!
