4-Banger getting a sudden gas mileage drop, help!
Hey everyone,
Just got my 4runner in September, 2000, with the 4-cylinder engine.
First few months been good, getting a good 22-24 mpg on the highway. However, as of late, I've been getting maybe 16 in the city and barely 20 on highway.
Check engine light did come on, gave me a "Insufficient EGR Flow" when read from the scanner. Could this be an issue? Do I need to clean out the EGR?
Anything else I should look out for? I got it in September with 50k, now just a tick over 55k miles on it. Thanks!

For that drastic drop, I would suspect either EGR (as you stated) or O2 sensor. If your truck has less than 60K on the clock, emissions related parts should be covered under Toyota warranty.
