i have searched but not quite found the answer im lookin for. I am looking at getting some 285/75/16 on my 98 4runner and also want to re gear to maby 4.88's. but im not sure how the gears would perform on a daily driver. so i was wondering if anyone is running 4.88's and how the drivability is. for example driveing on the highway. my goal is to be geared lower than stock in the end and im not so much re gearing to compinsate for bigger tires. what do you guys think?

you'll enjoy it, i'd go for it. highway will be fine especially if your auto, hell and 5speed too.

To get a better idea try an online calculator. They can tell you what the RPM difference would be with different size tires and gear ratios. Remember, your speedo will be off and your anti-lock brakes may no longer work correctly.

ABS should work just fine, as long as the four tires match.

thanks for the info everyone that defiantly helps make up my mind. i dont have an automatic but it sounds like it will be ok tho.

how is it going to be on snow/slick roads, I'm drooling over doing this too. same truck!

is there anyone against the 4.88s in a dd. i work right behind slee off road and stopped in to get there opinion and they sounded kinda against it. i would expect lower gas mileage and higher rpm's, are there other draw backs i should consider?

I have 4.88's and I love them. The only issue is a 5 mph difference on the OD.

I have a 5 speed with 285's and I think the stock 4.10's are perfect for it. It's nice and smooth at 2500 rpm's at 70. I get 20-23 mpg on the highway too. I ran some 245/75-16's on my 4Runner for a few months and I felt like it was screaming down the highway at 3,000 rpm's at 65.

I'm sure around town the 4.88's are awesome and off-road they are nice, but I personally like the 285's, 4.10's and 5 speed setup.

I get maybe 19 on the highway, and thats keeping my foot out of it. and its not windy for once!
I was just curious 4.88's and maybe a e-locker, for all-around use and snowy roads. Winds/ice, snow is the normal day 3/4 out of the year, plus i snowboard. trying to decide if this is a good set up for me. Not worried about losing 1 mpg.. speedo is off 2-3 mph, found that out by getting pulled over, now i use my GPS. work for me??

do you guys think it would harm the engine by driving at constant high rpm's or higher than normal rpm's? i drive about 15 to 20 minutes on the highway every day

Yup, you caught me, I must be lying. Sorry, maybe I'm just a bit lighter on the gas than most. You'd be amazed what steady 65 on cruise will do for ya. I am also running premium fuel which seems to help too. Those numbers are without my roof rack on. I am sure of my numbers too as my Scan Gauge 2 is set at 7% so that my speed matches my GPS. Even with my stop and go commute of 90 miles each day, I'm getting 19-20 mpg.

I wouldnt run the 4.88's unless you are going to 35's tires. Even with 35's and a 5Spd the RPMS are higher than when i was 265/75/16 and 4:10's.

I would highly recommend againt it unless you are not worries aobut Highway speeds or going to 35's

i just did a 1500mile trip with my 4.88's the whole time i was 3K + on the rpm.

The faster you spin the motor at higher RPMS the shorter your engines life span--->As the saying goes Horsepower doesnt kill engines but RPMs do.

Seriously 4.88's and not being on 35's--doesnt make good logical sense.

Would 4.30's or 4.56's be a better match to 285/75r16's?

personally, i would think 4.56 would make more sense. Check out that calculator---and compare to what you have now and what you would have after the change.

For example Tranny (5th gear) .083, Diff (4.XX) and Tire Size 285/85/16--plug in the numbers are see if those are speeds and RPMS you can live with. Make a choice based on what you want and can live with!!

If/Possibly--i wouldnt mind going back to 4.10's but get a R151F tranny.....Great highway speeds and great town speeds....
