4.3 Conversion Started

Well I have started the 4.3 Conversion. Right now I am going to rebuild the motor first but when I get that done the real process of conversion starts. I am going to sell stuff off the old motor, https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...678#post284678.

I have looked at the Adance Adapters catalog and am considering a Vortec 4.3 to swap later on. Plenty of power and a reasonable size. Have you found any info on splicing into the chassis harness so that all the guages and other components still work? I've seen complete low mile 4.3 engines with harness and computer for around $1000 so it seems to be a more cost effective alternative.

I am using a 91 4.3. I will rebuild the motor first and than I know a guy how does wiring and has done this many times before. He charge $350 for the labor. Seems reasonable. I will let you know how it turns out.

Did you have to use a body lift kit?

Some day I might want to do the same to my 3vze.

I have been toying with the ideas of WHAT will replace my 3.0 when the time comes. I have toyed with the 4.3, 289, 302, 305, & 350. Do you know if you will have to swap out the D shafts or will the Toyota drivetrain work? I am guessing its a case of changing out the engine mounts (welding)? What all comes in the AA 4.3 conversion kit? My 3.0 is not dead but if I could get into the conversion for under $1900 im good to go. I will have my ears glued to this thread for sure. Ben

Well I have had the motor at the machine shop and am in the process of rebuilding it. I should be completed with it next week. I am waiting on the AOR Orbital Eye springs to show up so I can get the SAS done and than the 4.3 Conversion. As for the cost, I bought a 91 blazer complete and it ran. I was told to take as much of the wiring harness as possible, so I did. The cost for the wiring is going to be $350 labor plus parts. Since I have most of the stuff if not all of the stuff, actual part(s) cost should be low.

don't think you're going to have much luck finding a "kit" for many engine swaps. usually, at least with downey you'd get engine mounts, possibly headers and likely some kind of bellhousing adaptor(which i wouldn't do, i'd put something like a T18 in if i ever went to an american V6)

something is going on at marlin crawler. they're hinting at a taco 2.7 swap kit in the future, which i can see since they're putting one in marlin's truck to replace the 20R/22R hybie

There are a lot of v6 and MILD v8s using the Toyota trans, especially the v6 trans and doing fine. But I agree, they're barely up to it and if you're rough with it they'll destruct. For anyone thinking of doing this swap, you must realise that there are no step by step how-to's and no comprehensive kit. You can buy all the big parts (motor mounts, adapters, radiator, etc, but you'll have to trial and error stuff like radiator and heater hoses and fab lots of little things like clutch and throttle linkages, and air intakes and exhaust systems. Then there's the wiring (which to me is the easiest part but that's part of what I've done for a living these past 20 years.) To me it seems like it boils down to if you aren't sure you can figure out the small stuff as you go along, you probably aren't up to doing the swap yourself, even the so-called kits arent really kits. But be encouraged - it's really not as daunting a task as some would think, and as long as you can ask questions on forums like this one, and leave yourself plenty of time and $$ to get it done, with the right attitude and some tools you can do this.

Oh, got you mixed up - I thought you were talking about swapping in a 4.3 liter V8 from the Lexus SC/LS 430. NOw that would be a worthwhile swap!

300 HP and 325 TQ!!!

...would be worthwhile, except for the fact you'd have 2X as much money in the engine as the whole truck is worth.

Well I almost have the Toyota motor out. I have been working alot out of town, so I have been working on it here and there. But I am still waiting for the AOR springs that are about 12 weeks behind delivery schedule. So Right now, I am just waiting. When the springs come in, which I was told this next week, I will be getting hot and heavy. When the motor is pulled, I will be starting the SAS. I have for the front RC60, and Standard 60 for the rear. I will have to sell the tires that I am running now and the lift that is on the truck now, pro comp stage 1. I will be able to get tires. Then I will have to get some more money built up to get the innerds, gears, lockers, etc. Than I will be ready to go 4 wheeling again!!!! In do time, I will be back on the road.
