3RZ 2.7L with 2 dead holes
Well I picked up a 98 4X4 Reg Cab Tacoma last night. Its got the 3RZ as you know, and the 5 speed manual. Got it for real cheap because it has a misfire. After driving it home 5 miles it was quite clear it was not running all on cylinders. The previous owner had installed brand new coils, plug wires, and plugs. He told me he thought it had a bad injector or possibly two. I have seen bad injectors before on V8's and that did not seem to be the case to me. Anywho first thing I did after pulling it in the garage was light the wood stove LOL like 5 F outside. Then I pulled codes:
P0300 Multiple cyl misfire
P0301 Cyl 1 mis
P0303 Cyl 3 mis
Well I figured lets get right down to it and see if the engine is ok. Pulled all the plugs out, yanked the EFI relay and fuse, zip tied the throttle body wide open, hooked up my aux battery jumper box and went to checking compression:
Cyl #1 = 35 psi
Cyl #2 = 150 psi
Cyl #3 = 40 psi
Cyl #4 = 170 psi
So the next question is do I have maybe just cylinder head problems? I have read about some on here. Or worst case is the engine toast? Just looking for your guys thoughts before tear down.
Also anyone have a link to a factory service manual for the 3RZ? The paper ones on ebay are like $200.
Thanks guys.

You'll also have to do a "wet test" to guide you further. Throw some engine oil in the cylinder you're about to test then run the compression test again. If the compression goes up it could be something as simple as new piston rings. Good luck!
