Smile 3rd gen Yakima roofrack Install

OK this is the Yakima control tower/landing pad install for the 3rd gen. I don't remember how the 2nd gen is set up.

Tools needed: T25 star and allen wrench(Yakima provided)
Time needed : about one hour

Stock 3rd gen w/ factory roofrack.

1. Take front of rack off with the T25 bit. Then do the back.

2. Take off factory front rack, and then back rack.

3. Since I had factory rack I used landing pads part#0221

3b. Place end pieces back on. replace, now drop the T25 bit and look for it for about 10 mins(optional)

4. Add the control towers #0214

5. Place the bars in and cap them.

6. While you are u there move the middle cross bars and wax under each

7. Snap on fairing and tighten all bolts down. (p.s use the sunroof for access)

Results:

This was a easy install. I recommend this rack to anyone, and this can be done without the instructions. Very happy with this now I just have to use it.

part numbers can be found at Yakima.com

0214 control towers
0408 round bars
0221 Landing pads
7204 SKS locks (opt)
7047 38" fairing

This was bought from rackwarehouse.com total $268.15 free shipping

Dale

Is there an actual basket on this, or is it just replacement cross bars you paid nearly $300 bucks for? I'm just curious, do you have any side pics of it?

And worth each penny my friend...It is a very user dependant mod may not make much of a difference to some.

I use it to carry bikes and other stuff

can one easily pop the bars off (taking along the towers) and just leave the landing pads in?

i did the same thing a few years ago but used Q Towers (by Yakima). These are lockable.

You sure can, I have the locks, so turn of a key and you can get them off the landing pads..

Not to thread jack.. but since we're on the topic of racks. I went with the full Thule setup because I don't like the Yakima round bars, plus the feet on the Thule look really nice. The basket is actually a Yakima BasketCase that I adapted to the Thule load bars. My goal in this project was to be able to put a basket on that was flush with the cross bars. I wanted to still be able to park in the garage. Also, this basket sits lower than the fairing for unloaded at least it's afforded some wind protection.

The grass is protruding up through the rack but you can still see it.

Excellent, I like this setup as I can keep certain items on the yakima rack and just add it when needed (like a kayak rack). I guess it might be similar for the Thule system (rearviewmirror?)

more questions:
1) how easy would it be to change the bar length? Does the towers need to be removed? (sometimes a wider bar could be preferred, but the chance of hitting your head increases it seems).

2) I noticed Yakima makes roof rails that can be added to the vehicle but does anyone know if they work with a 4runner (is the roof shaped to only fit the OEM rack)? The reason is I would like the bars further apart when I have my kayak on top (another option would be to add a bar that clips in over the doors instead).

Thanks
