3rd Gen Project
Just wanted to give an update about the project that I've been working on for a few weeks. After selling my 98 a few years ago, I have missed the 3rd gens big time...so I ended up finding a 97 in good shape with a blown motor. The body and interior are in great shape. The guy's wife drove it and didn't chage the oil for 20k miles....needless to say when i pulled the pan off, it was full of sludge, metal shavings, and multiple pieces of rod. So the old motor is out and I have a new one sitting in the garage ready to go in. It has 68k miles on it and actually came with a one year unlimited mileage warranty from a company right here in Central Ohio. It looks to be in great shape but I wanted to do the follwoing before it went back in:
-T belt, tensioner, h20 pump, T-stat
-accessory belts
-valve cover gaskets
I also will be doing the fuel and air filter and changing all the fluids in the truck as well. I also found a trans cooler from my 98 that will be going in as well.
What do you think about the TQ converter? It looks to be in great shape but the truck has 160k on it. Is this something I should be replacing? I just don't want to have to pull the trans a year or 2 down the road.
Thanks for the help.

Nice write up. BTW, my best friend is a transmission guy with his own shop in Grove City. PM me if you need any tranny work done.
Good luck with the project!

Wow! I'm gonna change my oil every 1,000 mile now!
Thats ridiculous! If she didn't change the oil...I can't imagine the rest of routine maintenance that was neglected!
Good work though man, keep us updated.

if your tranny was doing fine b4, then dont worry about the torque converter. you can tell when the torque converter start to go bad, it jolts a bit when you step on the gas.
if there arent any leak, just drop it in and drive.

Thanks for the help guys. That's the thing, I've haven't driven this before, it was blown when I picked it up...Just curious what the average lifespan of the converter is?
I would have loved to do a diesel. I was all ready to throw a 2LT into my 88.
