3rd gen overdrive q
i have an 02 sport runner, and sometimes when i'm going up a hill, i switch off the overdrive to try and downshift. the only problem is, it usually UPshifts, and the tach drops by about 500 rpm. when i'm going downhill and turn off the OD, it does what its supposed to and and downshifts, letting me use the engine to brake. the same applies when i am on a level road; disengaging the OD causes me to downshift. what's the deal? only when i am on an uphill grade does disengaging the OD cause my tranny to upshift??!! is this a sign of troubles to come, or is there some kind of confusion with the torque converter etc.? any help helps. thanks fellers

hmm id try a fluid flush..maybe theres not enough or some air in there because with diffrent orientations of the vehcile changing the problem that could easily be it

thanks for the tips guys. i do all my regular maintenance the second the interval comes up, and just had my 45k done 5k ago. i think that pretty much takes care of the fluids, and this has been an issue since i got the runner. i'll check 'em again though, just to be sure. anybody else ever experience this before? thanks again!
