3rd Gen Knocking noise solution

I have a 97 4runner I bought new and it now has 193k miles on it. I've had virtually no problems from this vehicle. I had this knocking problem and read posts covering everything from rod knock, bad sensors, to a bad valve.
After using a scope it was determined to be coming from the lower idler pulley. We replaced it and the knock was gone for 3 blocks. We returned to the shop and determined that the noise was still in the area of the pulley. What was it? It was the AC belt. Even though the belt was relatively new it was the culprit. 100's of miles later it's still quiet as a mouse. I hope this helps at least one other person.
We were going to sell the truck until asking myself what I'd get to replace it. I really like the truck and it's as nice as the day I bought it so we're going to run it til it dies.

Thanks for your post! Every time something like this happens and someone takes the time to post it here, it saves someone so much time and hassle in the future when trying to diagnose and fix the same issue.

Eventually, YotaTech will be a master repository for 4Runner information, and we'll all be able to fix everything on these things with our eyes closed!

Thanks!
