3rd gen hitch question
I noticed that Toyota has different part numbers for receiver hitches on 96-00 and 01-02 4Runners. However, other brands (Reese and Hidden Hitch) have the same part number for all 3rd gens. Just wondering what the differences between the Toyota parts was. I am looking at the possibility of getting a hitch from a 2000 for my 2002 and wanted to make sure there wasn't any compatibility issues.

99% positive its only the design of the hitch... earlier ones were bolted together, later ones were welded together.
I know this because I was thinking about getting an ealier one, unbolting the sides, and cutting the bumper to get more clearance (i.e. the hitch part would be above the bar)

I know some countour and tuck to the bumpers better than others. The 98's and earliers have just a straight bar across, where as my 99, the hitch sort of forms a V, so that the only part that sticks out is right at the middle where the receiver slides in. I think they'll probably all interchange, some just tuck/ look better than others perhaps.

I have the stepside bed on my '03 prerunner, and have been in search for a hitch for quite some time.
Toyota tells me they do not have one available for my truck because of the bed. Is this true?
I have researched various sites to find one on my own, but no luck yet.
It seems that I will have to fabricate one myself. Looking on the bright side, it will be cheaper that way.

So, the older hitches would be much easier to mod and take apart.
Notice the bolts.

Again, right on 3.4v6,
Today, I visited a place that not only manufactures hitches, but sells some pre-fabbed units. They said exactly what you have said.
So....I had to satisfy my curiousity and break out the tape measure.
The Hidden Hitch part #87579 will tuck under my stock bumper quite nicely. I am now debating whether or not to break out $135.00 for it, or just make my own, what a dilemma.
Thanks for the input.
