3rd Gen grab handle... you have one?
I just notice on my 98 Limited I have one on the A pillar but nothing up above the window like on the passenger side. However, I can see "through" the headliner that there are two possible holes where a handle can go. Anybody have any help on this? I doubt I'd need one since I have the giant round one I usually hold on to "some call it a steering wheel" but if there were holes already there I'm sure I could dream of something I didn't need to put up there, to put up there.

Usually you can just get another handle and screw it on. I did that on my 1st gen and it fit perfect:

One of the benefits of the world-wide distribution, LHD and RHD versions would need handle mounting holes for both sides.

so you guys are saying there is indeed some tapped holes behind the headliner? I'd assume the same as the other side... wonder why they went to the trouble of drilling but never put them in?

I'm guessing they just left it off thinking that as the driver you have the steering wheel to hold on to, but just go down and buy a handle, and put it in, you'll have two handles on each side.
oh yeah, and remember that over in Japan it's reversed, so they'd need that bracket on that side-

You are absolutely correct on the holes on the drivers side for that grab handle-- I installed one awhile back when I put my A-pillar dual gauge pod in--- Very simple install just order the correct part & color to match your vehicle from TOYOTA...
You can even just pull the one from the passenger side and install it just to see how it looks...

is it safe to say that if the grab handle is removed from the A pillar it could be reused over head and just transfer all parts?

thanks man, no rush on the handles they'll be here for a while. the rigs being featured over at tundra headquarters sometime this month he may use some new badass shots from some runs last month.
also, keep an eye our for the aforementioned custom handle mod. if i can get some steady specifics down i'll post a write-up, should be a pretty cool addition

a simple glance and I should have known
doh it is blatanly obvious now that I look at them both-the roof mount ones are shorter.
Are you guys sure it is pre-tapped/drilled on the drivers side head area? I don't feel anything through the headliner....

I went down to a local junk yard and picked up a passenger side handle for $3. It mounted perfectly to the hidden driverside holes.
I believe every 4Runner since inception had the driverside headliner "oh crap" handle holes pre-drilled simply b/c some 4Runners were offered in left hand drive, the others, right hand drive. Heck, my previous '86 4Runner even had the holes pre-drilled, hidden behind the headliner. I did the same "handle mod" to that 4Runner too.

I just found this thread as I am wanting to add a handle above the drivers door. My local dealer told me there weren't holes there, but i can feel them. Going by this thread, I should be good to punch holes in the head liner and bolt on the handle.
The bigger problem is finding the handle. At this stage, it seems like all the junk vehicles have been picked over. Does anyone know where to find NOS handles?
Thanks for your help,
Jerry
