38's on a 98

i have a 98 runner i've been driving around with 285's with the ome 3inch front and rear, heavies up front and mediums in the rear. it also has a one inch body lift for added clearance. i just picked up a set of 38x12.5x16.5 super swamper bias tsl's on 16.5 inch alloy rims used for cheap and decided to make them fit.(they actually measure about 36.5") The runner is the limited so i have the 3.4 with auto and also have the stock 4.30 gears in it. what kind of hell hole and i letting myself get sucked into?
so far i have trimmed the back side of the front fenders and cut the rocker back on an angle to give some clearance, and in the rear i pretty much just flattened the pinch weld and trimmed the flare on the door. i am running a tjm front bumper and my own custom built rear bumper so those aren't in the way or anything. mainly im concerned about the wear on the cv's and rest of drive line. and thoughts?

my original idea was to get these just for the rims and pick up a set of hummer military surplus goodyear wrangler r/t II's in the 36x12.5x16.5 especially since i can get a full set for under 400 bucks almost brand new.

other concerns are that i just replaced the pass side wheel bearing about a year ago and it seams like the driver side is getting ready to need replacement within the next year(a lil loose but nothing really bad). since last time in parts and getting the bearings pressed in cost me almost 500 bucks with a discount thru my work with toyota i'm contemplating going sas with a 78-79 f250 dana 44 or wagoneer 44 and scooting the axle forward a few inches. either way what gear ratio should i go with? i do a good bit of traveling/light towing, which i plan on keeping my 33's to toss back on to do such. would 4.56 be sufficient or 4.88's be better? i do mostlly mud and sand as i do live in south jersey but i plan on making some trips soon to rausch creek.

4.88's should be fine. Thats what the Tacoma guys run who are "SAS'ed" and have large meats. I run 35's on 4.30's without problems.

As far as them fitting... uhh you'll need a good steady hand since you'll be trimming the crap out of the front fenders. The rear end .. I have no idea, you can't trim that much. You'll probably have to either shove some long FJ80 coils in the rear or do a leaf swap, or go totally custom with a 3-4 link coil setup... I rub pretty good when offroading with the 35's and 7" of lift...I've trimmed a lot too, now I am down to very minor rubbing.

The CV's are "said" to max out on 35" tires. Depends on the wheeling you do and how much of a lead foot you have.

Yeah I would say to run 38's safely, you'll need to upgrade your entire suspension...Dana 44 swap up front, nice large brakes, and a leaf swap in the rear...this will be costing at least $5k if done correctly! Why not just go 35's?

He's got the wheels and tires might as well give it a shot, but yeah more than likely I'd hold off until your rig is properly suited to equip 38s. some girl on here had put 37" creepy crawlers a while back on something like a spacer lift and 3" body lift. I gave her hell about it but she ended up doing it and had the pics to prove it. Try contacting her and see how lifes treating her

This is with the 35's. No trimming. She rubs a little on the upper control arms when turning. no rubbing in the rear. I have not put the t-case shifter extender on yet but will in the future. The 4 wheel drive shifter still works it just looks sucked down.

Hope this helps !!

did toyota switch to some ty CV's in bettween the 2nd gen 4runner and the 3rd????...i dont think so??(at least not that im aware of) therefor the cv's should be just fine if a 3rd gen pickup can run em?

That looks impressive. If that's all the rub you're getting, that's not bad at all.

3rd gen pickups are from 89-95...
2nd gen 4runners are form 90-95
3rd gen 4runners are from 96-02...

YES there is a change in EVERYTHING in the front end between a 3rd gen pickup/2nd gen 4runner and a 3rd gen 4runner

and to the OP...
that looks beefy... but its sad that you've stuff it and are only flexed out on a 6" car ramp.... you have NO flex, and you're going to blow up CVs if you wheel it at all. that is a s-ton of rotating weight... have you done any brake upgrade? any reinforcement of anything? if this is 100% street queen and your just going for looks you've done a good job.. if you plan on having any functionality of having a "reliable" offroad rig, by jumping up to 38s on a IFS 3rd gen runner, you're far from a job well done.

jsut my 2 cents.

Yeah it may work on some blocks...

Try going offroading though... There wont be much room for comfort.
