Now I need a starter to rebuild so I can just put the rebuilt one in and then rebuild the bad one as a spare.

just in and out or else it will end up setting who knows how long.

Is there any difference between the starters although they have two different part numbers between the AT and manual other then maybe the output?

as far as i can tell there is no physical difference maybe they ran a different plug. i ran into that when i tried to run a starter from a different year on one of my 3.0s starter was from an AT went into a MT I just snaged the AT plug an repinned it

The difference is in power output(of the motor).
AFAIK, the same theory applies to later models(96+). Only the numbers change. So...

1.4kW = USA manual transmission
1.8kW = USA automatic transmission, USA manual transmission Cold Spec, Canada manual transmission
2.0kW = USA automatic transmission Cold Spec, Canada automatic transmission
2.2kW = diesel engine

I knew it was with the older mid eighties 22REc engines.

But sometimes things change.

I can attest to the fact that there is no physical difference. I didnt change my starter when I swapped in a manual transmission. Tho original starter worked just fine.
