Tick..Tick..Tick

When I give my truck gas there is a tick or a puff sound coming from the passenger side of my engine....is this the infamous tick or something else??

i get that too when its cold.....im wondering if its intake backfire,you know like a carb does.

okay....mine only ticks when I press on the gas, it doesn't matter how slow or fast, or what the rpm's are, hot or cold....it sounds like it could be an exhaust leak or something....I've read mostly all of the ticking posts on this forum and mine seems different. Does it sound like a bad injector or valve...my oil life is fine and I can hear it with the windows up and music on...it's not a rattle(I've got that too), maybe I should just take it to toyota and see what they say????

cheak all your vacum lines & air filter,then clean your throttle body as well.
then see if it still does it.

All 3.0's make the ticking sound. It's normal for that engine.

I have the same problem too. How do you make it go away??? Or is there a way for this noise not to appear inside the truck???

Always remember to check that steering shaft seal.

Look under the dash where the steering shaft penetrates the firewall. There should be a rubber seal around it (not just a hole into the engine compartment). If the seal is missing you will get a ton of ticking noise coming through the hole. It is easy to replace yourself and the part costs around $15 at the dealership. If this is the case, make sure you put a good amount of grease on the new one to cut back on squeaking when you turn the wheel.

just did my seal replacement, piece of cake--just be sure to mark your steering shaft with whiteout or something or you'll have a hell of a time trying to get your wheel aligned again. BTW I couldn't believe the difference...

What do I need to take apart in order to replace the seal??? Do I need to remove the dash??

yup, thats the link I used, the shaft might be a little fused together in the engine bay, just give it some muscle and slide it towards the firewall, other than that it's about a 30-40 minute job. I removed the air intake elbow assembly to get easier access to the bolt on the shaft.

You took the shaft apart in the engine compartment? I took off the joint that connects the steering wheel to the shaft (inside the truck). It took me all of about 10min to complete the job.

Ticking is usually the sound of the injectors it sounds like a small clicking noise they can be a little noisy it is typical though.
If it is alot louder than that your valves maybe really loose in tolerence then it can be really noisy.
The puff puff noise is sometimes a indication of a skip in your engine. Other than that it maybe the manifold crossover tube leaking they are 14mm nuts it's a pita to tighten the passengers side but doable try it and see if the noise goes away.
If it is suspected to be the valves the only way to check your valves would be to pull the intake plenium off and pull the valve cover turn the engine via the pulley with a breaker bar and check each of the valve tolerences between the cam lobe up and the valve shim they should be between .007-.011 on the intakes and .009-.013 on the exhaust. Also remember the passengers side intake and exhaust sides are inverted compared to the drivers side.

Is a "shim job" routine maintainance, or one of those things you can get by without ever doing? What would a dealer/mechanic charge for such a service or how about a fair price? I read the hayes manual for the service and it seems like a tedious project......any input appreciated..

The shims wear down over time and the gap gets bigger.
It's quite expensive about a $600-700 job at the dealer.
I can be done by the weekend mechanic. It's about a 6-8 hr job to do if everything goes right.
