3.0 Head gasket blew yesterday!
Well it happened. After about 100k since the last one.
I was wondering if there is any prefference for gasket sets?
The stealer wants $320.00 and the local Global supply wants $220.00 for the head gasket kit.
I will be starting the teardown tonight and will need to determine what kit I should go with.
Anybody have any experience with this project?

when i was looking for a set, I found that a compleate gasket set for the engine to be like a 175$ at the parts store while at the same store just the headgasket set was $225
so you got all kinds of extra gaskets and the ones you need for $50 less. Might wana ask both places.

An engine rebuilding kit means you have chosen to rebuild your engine.
A head gasket usually means you were forced to do it.
I bet that is why they perp you on just the gasket.

I just picked up a '93 4Runner in Texas last month. I ran the VIN number with Yota and the gasket replacement was done in '98.
It seems that a gasket repair done before '96 that leads to another failure may still be considered for replacement AGAIN by YOTA. See info below:
"Q:I would like to know if there is a recall on T-100's and or 4Runners for defective engine head gaskets. I received a notice from my selling dealer to this effect. I now live 280 miles away and can't bring it to them. What do you suggest I do? Susan G.
A: In December 97 Toyota decided to start a full campaign called V6 for Head gaskets replacement for V6 engines in trucks produced from 90-94. Not all engines in those years are affected so contact your dealer for more information or wait for the notice from Toyota. The early models from 88-90 fall under another program and will be repaired if they develop a leak. If your vehicle has had the head gaskets replaced by a dealer since October 96 then it is considered repaired and will not be performed again, unless a leak develops. What you received is a solicit ion by the dealer to do the work to boost their service business. Should you have it done now is up to you. I would wait a little since, if there is no problem, then just the head gaskets will be replaced but if a leak develops then more is repaired. If you are going to keep the vehicle for a long time the repair will benefit you. There is not time limitation for this update at this time."

That's the guy's home page.
I would call Yota customer service and ask them if they will pay for it. OR... you can have my wife call. She'll get anything that's due you..she's Italian if you know what I mean!!
PS I glad to see someone else in the world is named Christian. :tomcat:

You might wanna give Tim at DOA a call about his 3.0 head studs. They're supposed to prevent the main cause of head gasket failure. Might be a worthy investment.

2. Upon getting it home I removed the oil fill cap and saw the evidence, MUDDY oil!
3. The head campaign was done when the truck had 140k on the engine. It now has 243k on it.
I'll check with Toyota to see if it will be covered again, I would be surprised if they did.

Yeah the kits I'm refering to are from the heads up only.
I did get an incredible price for the gasket kit and bolts from http://www.engnbldr.com/

Tim probably knows more about the 3VZE than anybody. His stuff is the real deal too... anybody here who knows him can attest to that.

Also any aftermarket will not be as good. Get the rebuild kit from TOR. I got mine for less then $250. All factory parts and you get all gaskets needed for a full rebuild. Or you can get the head gaskets for more... :pat:

I personally think the DOA studs are overpriced. Actually, looking at their site, everything appears to be pretty pricey. $4500 and up for a short block? $9600 for a 225hp long block? WTF!

I was searching ARP, but didn't see a listing for the 3VZE. I wonder what other Toyota engines use the same size?
