2nd Generation Rear Recovery Points

After reading many posts it seems that the only way to have a rear recovery point on a 2nd generation 4runner is by using the shackle that fits in the trailer hitch.

Is there any way to attach a hook similar to the one on the front, on the rear? It does not seems to be anywhere to mount the hook so that it is very accessable.

I have an extra hook and would like to utilize it as a rear recovery point.
Any ideas/suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

Weld a frame down below the bumper and attach it. There is nothing back there, if you have a factory bumper, to attach to.

I don't have the means to have something welded on to my frame. There is no other way to go about this?

Would it be possible to use a standard 2" hitch without the ball and drill two holes in it to bolt the hook to? All the hooks I've had are drilled up already. Then if you needed it, just put it in the receiver.

If you dont have a Reece type hitch, I would say no. I have a 91 and when the stock bumper was on it there was nothing at all to hook the back to. However you can try this, If you wanted to. Under your truck are the shipping points from where they tied down the truck when sent. Two holes attached to the frame. If you use two shackles and a strap between them you could get yourself out of a hole. I say use two points so you are pulling it out straight and not at one side. Now If you do this and whatever is pulling you out is higher up than you, you risk the chance of tearing off the bumper. I dont know how much wheeling you are planning on doing, but If it is a decent amount, take the bumper off totally if you are worried about it. Then reattach it when done, or leave it off. I dont know VA's laws on bumpers.

I've been thinking of someway to mount some shackles to my trailer hitch...the nice thing, after my body lift theres a nice 1" gap between the hitch and bumper which actually looks pretty good but it also serves as good clearance to put a hook or something down there.

I would try and come up with something to attach to your hitch to use for recovery...I'm a big fan of my nice WARN Receiver Shackle though

Before I had my hitch I used to take some shackles and put them through a piece on the frame right behind the rear bumper. They are part of the frame and have a hole in them. Only thing is they are higher than the rear bumper so it will pulling up on your bumper if you are using them. I only used em when I absolutely had to. Got me unstuck a few times.

Looked at the same issue years ago.. gave up and use the “Reese” receiver.. It’s the strongest point back there.. acquire a piece of 2 x 2 stock and drill it for both the “Reese” and a shackle..

like this..

If ya want to know a secret, You dont need a seperate shackle to go in the reciever, Just shove the loop end in, and put a pin through it. It will hold the same as a shackle reciever, due to the fact that you use the same pin to hold the shackle in. Hook it on there, and throw it in the back through the window, or wrap it on your roof rack for easy access.

4x4Fink, not sure about what style you have, but I made a tube bumper and flipped the hitch over so I gained about 2.5 inches clearance from the 2" reciever no longer hanging down. It now is on top of the cross bar. I then attached the bumper to the hitch itself. Worked out pretty well, for $20.00 dollars in 1.5 inch pipe and a couple 90 degree elbows.

Yeah man, I forgot about that trick...I've read about it on here before.

First step is gonna be repainting it, or getting it Rhinolined...not sure what I'm gonna do yet.

Thanks for the tip man,

Fink
