2nd Gen Rear Discs? Anyone converted?
I've been considering this for a number of years due to the rate with which I replace front rotors. Everything adjusted OK on the drums, they just don't stop like 4 wheel discs.
With adding the 33's, it has gotten a bit worse. I have purchased a set of Powerslot front rotors, so that may help a bit, but I need to do my research for a possible sooner than later upgrade. The Powerslots have not gone on just yet. I also hope to move to 35's in the future.
I've been looking at the Front Range Off Road Full Floater/Rear Disc conversion kit they developed. There seem to be some good benefits to doing the full floater with the side benefit of gaining discs in the back. Since my rig is also a DD, I like the added durability this adds. Never had a problem so far, but there's nothing wrong with upgrading...
There's a writeup of this kit in an old 4Wheel and Off Road (the big Toyota issue). That explains the steps pretty well.
Has anyone done a rear disc conversion?

I've got the rear discs installed, but i havent run them yet. Supra motor still isnt running. I can post my pics if you so desire. Biggest thing i've heard is you need to swap out the automatic brake proportioning valve with an adjustable one so you can turn down the rear brake bias permanently, b/c they provide so much clamping force your rear wheels will lock up since there isnt much weight on them under moderate/heavy braking.

I used the brackets from sky manufacturing but they stopped carrying the calipers not long before i ordered my set. I couldnt find any acceptable calipers at local junk yards so i ordered rebuilt calipers from downey. I'd suggest just ordering the calipers and brackets together to ensure they are a direct fit. The calipers called for from sky manufacturing were supposed to be mid 80s GM i belive ( its on their website ) and the ones i ordered from Downey were GM but the guy on the phone couldnt tell me what year specifically, either he didnt know or its not important enough to matter. Anyway, when i installed mine they didnt look EXACTLY perfect like i wanted them to and im anal about things, especially important things like brakes. The brake pads were not centered exactly on the rotor, the immoble outer pad was touching and the inner was a good distance away from the rotor, so i fabbed up a very simple spacer from some scrap metal to place the outer pad slighly off the rotor, and the inner pad closer to the rotor. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad or not important fact, its just what i did. And i havent run them yet so i cant tell you if the pads will wear ok in this setup or if without the small spacer is correct. Im also not sure if the reason for it looking funny was from ordering parts from two places and having them not EXACTLY designed for each other or not. Save yourself the trouble and get everything from say downey, or wherever you wish.
I'm at work right now but ill post pics for you soon.
edit: brakelines also came from sky, they screwed right on without any problems to both my toy line and the GM calipers
