2nd gen Passenger side CV joint
Replaced the passenger side CV joint on my '93 today. $69.95 at Autozone with a lifetime guarantee.
Actually, it wasn't too bad. Since my Haynes book was little to no help with the ADD system - Here's how:
1. Curse at the Haynes book. Have a beer before your hands get all greasy.
2. Jack up the truck and put on jackstand.
3. Have a friend hold the brakes while you undo the six nuts holding the half-shaft to the differential.
4. Remove the tire.
5. Remove the shock. You may also want to remove the link attached to the end of the sway bar, but you don't have to.
6. Remove the grease cap off the end of the hub and the screw underneath it.
7. There are six small (10 or 12 mm) acorn nuts. Remove them and the washers underneath.
8. With a hammer, lightly tap the hub near each of these small studs. There is a small wedge around each one that will pop out. Remove all six and the end of the hub will come off quite easily. (This is a fantastic design BTW)
8. Remove the circlip.
9. Move the jack under the lowest part of the lower A-arm and jack it up as far as possible - touching the bump stop would be great if you could.
10. Slide the CV joint out. This is by far the most difficult part of the job (and that's saying something).
11. Reverse the above with the new CV joint being VERY careful with it so you don't get the internal parts out of alignment. Be VERY careful tightening the acorn nuts - I broke one off without even really trying hard.
12. Have a beer.
