2nd gen folks with no factory roof rails...installing racks ?

The 93 I just got has no roof rails.

I can add Yakima or Thule rails for around $100. From there, I can use either rack system with either rail. Seems a little spendy for me.

How are you mounting a rack on a 4dr 2nd gen ???

Thanks

David

my 93 has the factory rack and rails and, personally, i have gone with the thule system that mounts in the doorframes.

apparently testing has shown that the factory roof rails are not strong enough (internal support, perhaps) to manage extended carrying of large, wind-prone items like surfboards, sailboards, boxes, etc...

my whole setup cost about $250 with locks and a wind fairing (which is nice b/c it sits in front of the sunroof and makes the cabin much more quiet with it open).

one other thing: i think the roof rack is much more appropriate above the doors -- you can access it without having to stand on the rear tires...

I've gone out and have managed to salvage up a factory roof rack that I'm going to mount first on my non-factory roof racked 'Runner, then mount an aftermarket basket to it.

Entire Rack cost less than $60 bucks.... although I don't think most people would drill a hole threw there roof.... Or chop the back off either. hahaha

My local retailer (Agees.com) claim to beat any price. They advertise on the web a lot...

i know, $250 sounds steep, but i find ebay to be really spotty. sometimes you just want to know that you're getting what you paid for.

be sure to reinforce the factory mounts into the roof, i had a basket on mine w/ thule bars and it rippsed the entire system off the truck when i strapped my spare up there and went 4wheeling. Just becuase it says the factory system should be good to like 150lbs or something, i wouldnt trust it. The only thing holding all that on are 4 little sheetmetal screws.
