2nd Gen 3.0 AS reed Valve?

Has anyone heard of a AS reed valve on the 3.0 V6. Its on a 94 Runner, and makes a real weird noise. Basically, until the truck starts to warm up, the valve makes or emits a loud noise similar to that of an exhaust leak. Kinda a roar sound, you rev it the sound increases, and the tone is again similar to that of an exhaust leak. If you press on the top of the side of the valve, when its making the loud noise, the noise stops.

Does anyone know what this thing does, why its on the truck, and how crucial it is to the functionality of the vehicle. I believe it is related to emissions, but beyond that I have no idea.

Thanks for any help.

The AS REED VALVE is part of the air injection system so to speak.
The AS system uses gas pulses to draw air into the exhaust manifold to reduce the levels of HC & CO based on coolant temp, rpm, and throttle valve position.
Fresh air into the exhaust can be turned off by the ECU through the ASV-air suction valve & the vsv.
Hope that helps you out!

What would cause the valve to emit the noise it is? Since it is part of the air injection system, it isn't crucial for functionality, but for the sake of maintainance should it be replaced or diabled? Has anyone ever changed this valve before?

Thanks nunsa for the info!

It makes alot of noise because the AS reed valve is connected to your exhaust manifold basically when the rubber hose slips off the connection underneath the intake plenium that is routed to the intake. It has happened to me before you reconnect it the noise goes away. Not sure where the 22RE reed valve is located though follow the connections to the AS valve and see if you can find a hose that came off.

934rnr: this is on a 94 w/ a 3.0.... So your sayin that a hose has probably fallen off and thats whats causing the noise? The noise only happens occassionally when the engine is dead cold. Once the engine warms up, no more noise.... Is it possible tht something broke in the valve and is letting exhaust out somewhere, producing the noise?

Yes it does that when it's cold it is open when the engine warms up to operating temp it closes off. It opens and closes at different times via the vaccum hose that is attached to it. If there is noise though likely the hose fell off somewhere either off the AV it's self or under the manifold like I said or there is a hole in the hose causing that. The Valve is right next to the #5 spark plug wire it has a L shaped hose coming off it going into a large tube under the plenium.

Mine broke right at the tube coming off the exhaust manifold on my last wheeling trip but the noise was constant it was loud as hell like having no muffler on my vehicle.

Since mine isn't making noise all the time, would the problem lie in the valve itself?

I also quickly looked for a hose off, i didn't see anything, but it was a quick look. I'm going to spend tomorrow lookin at the thing, so i'll know for sure tomorrow?

thanks 934rnr for the help

Does anyone know if an aftermarket valve is just as good as a toy valve? Has anyone had any experience where they've had problems with these valves?
