22re Efficiency Upgrades

I want to get the best mileage and power out of my 1989 22re

I already have a k&N cold air intake and a flowmaster cat back 2.5" setup

What is the best bang for the buck???

I have been thinking about headers...What's best Downey, Thorley, LC Engineering.

How about a hotter coil or ignition system???

Keep in mind...I want power, but never at the stake of mileage.

I've got an 89 4runner 5spd 22re. Currently I get 19 mpg.

I would love to get up to 22.

Please help
-Seth

Well, you can add an electric fan for some added HP and possibly better MPG. Also, underdrive pulleys help to relieve strain on the crank and would improve gas mileage. Whether or not you would get all the money out of saving a few miles per gallon is debatable

I get 20=21 in town in my 2wd 5sd turbo xcab 28 on highway. I think ill get more on highway if i take a longer trip though. Have Redline MT90 in transmission. I wonder if that will help it sure shifts smoothly. Like a new truck now since i changed the fluid from gl-5 to gl-4.

one thing you might look into is a new fuel filter, they are only thirty bucks but are a huge pain to get to.

I can't find it. I have an 89 DLX 4runenr with a 22re 5spd.

I would gladly replace it.

Should be above the starter; may God or be with you in replacing it.

As for milage tips, things that I have done to my 86 4runner are Downey header and exhaust, Removed the roof rack (2mpg I swear), cleaned throttle body, replaced fuel filter, properly inflated tires (maybe alittle over inflated), cleaned EGR.

Probably the best thing is to not go over 3k rpm, I know its slow already but it has a big effect on milage.

Under the intake manifold. Replace w/a factory toyota one. The seem to be the best.
