Anyone know why Toyota is claiming more gas mileage for the automatic than the 6 speed? Doesn't make sense to me, especially since it is a 6 spd.
4.0-liter V6 engine with 6-speed manual (city/hwy) 16/21
4.0-liter V6 engine with 5-speed automatic (city/hwy) 18/22
These numbers are for a 4x4 DC short bed.

Why the hell are they putting a 6 speed in a doublecab?

The only thing I can think of as far as the auto getting better mileage is that autos have come a long way since the 90's and are much more efficient nowadays.

I am not too sure about Toyota's or if they have caught up with us at GM, but in General Motors, their tranny is shifted at exact rpm intervals plus secretive additions to the converter, all combined with the technologies of computers.

I should've clarified that a bit.... GM, Ford, and Dodge have all been trying to tweak those little MPG figures to gain more marketing. I know from GM's perspectives they have messed around with the transmission to make it lighter and using computers to activate different solenoids by closing/opening different ones. Not implying toyota has not caught up, just saying I wasnt sure what Toyota does differently since I only work on GM's but drive a Toyota for something new and different to wrench on. More to the point automotive manufacturers have used computers to control the auto tranny to make MPG's better than the manual tranny.

I'm new to the forum. In fact this is my first post.

My best guess would be that the 5 speed auto's overdrive gear ratio is taller (lower numerically), than the 6 speed manuals overdrive gear ratio.

So the engine is turning fewer rpm's at any given roadspeed with the auto, vs. the manual.

Oh yeah, great forum, I'm glad to find such a good resource for info.

Ya, but aren't all/most auto overdrives deeper than the highest gear in manuals? Manuals still generally get better gas mileage.

Sell your toyota now and retract all interest. Admit it the reason you work at GM is bacuase if you had a job at toyota at most you would be doing oil changes and routine tune ups and brake jobs. At least GM you can constantly replace and repair things because they always break or fall apart.

And hundereds of headgasket replacements for the post 91 2nd gens, and pinging problems with the TRD supercharger in the 3rd gens, and alxe boots tearing on both gens, and timing belts breaking, and so on. Toyota is not perfect and you know it (though they do have the better track record.)

I still want to kick someone in the nuts at GM for that severely crimped the turbo down pipe on my 94 6.5LTD one ton, and whomever dioticallly put the PMD on the damn IP making the standyne PMD overheat and die every 45k miles. And dont even get me started on the post '97 cooling upgrades for this engine which there should have been a recall for......

Ironmike - btw on the 4L80-e tranny with 4.10 and stock tires, when the TCC engages how much should the RPM's drop? Right now ours on the 1ton is only dropping about 150rpm. That cant be normal can it?

Give the new mexico built tacoma a little while.The drive train is put together down there to by people making 3 bucks an hour and cant read or speak english.I pick what dose the job not what kind of emblem is on the side.I have a 2002 and a 2004 tacoma.They lost me on the 2005s

If you go by a recent Car and Driver at barnes and noble or somethin, they did a review on the 05 tacoma. Also showed some comparisons in breaking, acceleration, and a few others against GM/Chevy, Nissan, and I think dodge and ford too. The comprables like Fronteir, Colorado, Dakota etc.
