2002 4runner Transfercase HELP

I have an 02 4runner that the dealership said needs a new transfercase. they quoted me 3500 for a new one w labor or 1700 for a used one w labor. I said no, but the car is still there. I just bought a used transfer case online w a warranty for 280 w shipping. To the point my question is can I just put it in my self?

To remove the old transfer case and put in the new one do i have to completely remove the transmission or can I leave it alone? Any links walkthroughs or pics would be very helpful!

You should be able to remove the t-case and leave the tranny in place. A tranny jack will help a lot, or get a friend or 2 to help.

be very careful as to why the stealer said the tcase was bad. I just repaired a 4wd system on a 01 when the stealer said the tcase was bad. The guy went and bought one and replaced it....still broken. Long story short, after about $1000 and still no luck, he brought it to us and it turned out tobe a broken shaft inside the front diff. Usually when the 4wd sys is having problems, its usually the actuators that have gone bad so...be careful

thanks for the info.... The problem with the old one was: Stuck in 4x4,I could shift between 4 l and 4 h but not into 2wd. The main concern was (is) a knocking,or clicking type noise coming from underneath, faster when I drove faster. I had it towed to a local shop and they had it for 12 days and couldn't pin point what was wrong with it. I then had it towed to the reno toyota stealership and they told me with in about 3 hours that I needed a new transfer case and possibly a new front diff but they weren't going to be able to tell until they put a new transfer case. So l where I am now is Im getting it towed to another shop that quoted me 500$ for the swap (tomoro) After that I may need to get a new front diff but I seriously hope not. If any of that sounds fishy let me know. Thanks

Sounds fishy, but, you can get a front diff for cheap if it really is screwed.

Theres a guy on TTORA selling a front diff for $50 right now in the Bay Area...

I sold mine for $100 on eBay. They aren't that expensive.

But, I can't see how it would be screwed as well.. check the transfer case first.

You can do it. It should be fairly simple. I would download the pages from an online FSM. I would email you them but I am away from my desktop.

im afraid you are gonna get ripped by a bad diagnosis. Doesnt seem like alot of techs know too much about the push button 4wd sys. I would realllllly look at the front diff before I replaced a big expensive piece like the tcase. Keep us informed in what happens.

BTW....I'm glad you have a sense of humor deathcougar. lol

I would take it up with the service manager on their initial "diagnosis", which was flat wrong it appears. I think from here on the diagnosis is up to them as far as cost goes. I would not pay them another dime until they know EXACTLY what is wrong with it.
