2001 Tacoma Engine Questions
Hi fellas, first post on YT. I (or rather my brother) has an 01 Taco with the 3.4 V6 in it, and this weekend i am going to tear into it to change the timing belt, tensioner, and both pullies. (water pump is leaking, just gonna change it all.) I have performed this repair on my girlfriends' 95 4runner, so i'm pretty familiar with the procedure. Few questions before i start-
On the WP, does it need any kind of sealant? I read that there are two different types of gaskets for the Tacos, the 4runner i put some shellac on it, not sure if i should do the same for this one. Paper/fiber gasket came in my Gates kit.
Is the crank bolt Torque to yield? Not sure if i need to go buy another one like i have had to with GM LS motors.
Are ya'll using anything to hold the cam sprockets in place? When i did this on the 4runner, it was a PITA to keep them steady while i was putting the belt on.
Thanks in advance guys.
P.S.- To the member who has the FSM's in his sig (sorry i don't remember your name!!), thanks a BUNCH. Its nice to actually see how its done, the chilton manuals are crap.

Crank bolt is non-reusable per FSM (Factory Service Manual). Crank bolt torque spec is 217 ft-lbs on install.
The link in the first post of this thread is a good how-to just in case you need a refresher.
Holding tool ... one example
I use the Aisin WP so don't know about the gasket. Gates says this. So, a small bead of Black RTV would seem reasonable.
Change the thermostat/t-stat gasket too.... 180F t-stat and install it with the jiggle valve in the 6 o'clock (down) position.
Recent thread here.

I swear i used the search feature
I might used a few dabs just to keep it held in place while the pump goes on, definitely dont want to overdo it. Going to toyota tomorrow to source a pulley bolt, may just see how much the metal/rubber gasket is. Also bought the t-stat with the rest of the parts, so that will get changed as well.
Ah, so YOU'RE the one with the FSM's... Thank you kind sir!

Alright, started tearing into this today... Upon teardown, i noticed that when i set the crank to 0 TDC, neither of the cam sprockets line up with the hash marks... On the 4runner, when i set it to TDC, both crank and cam hash marks lined up. Currently looks like this-
Crank-
Cam (both are off by about this much)
We have been having an issue with the truck dying as it accelerates (replaced both 02's and cats), as well as the truck will just crank and crank but not start. After seeing this i have a theory that the truck may have skipped a tooth or two, and when the advance kicks in, it is causing the truck to stall out, or it is not in the correct firing order upon start up, so it just cranks.. Am i way out in left field with this hunch or am i way off?

Could very well be it skipped a tooth. It will be interesting to see how the crank timing gear lines up to the TDC mark on the oil pump when you get the crank pulley off.

Well, the crank gear and the oil pump are lined up perfectly... shouldn't it be off a tooth as well?
I should have added/changed to my previous post that the truck will not start because of a loss of compression (due to the valves not being opened in the right order/time), not because it is in the wrong firing order. Thats what i get for thinking after i type.lol

No, if the tensioner got weak or the belt stretched the cams can hop a tooth and the crank alignment can be fine. Put all the marks to TDC on re-assembly and hope she purrs.

I'm trying to get my cam sprockets lined up and as soon as i go to put the tensioner pulley in, it moves the cam sprockets about a tooth or two. So i retarded the cams back a tooth, and i cant get them perfectly lined up with the hash marks.. i wind up being at least a quarter to half tooth off. Anyone got any advice on how they did it? I don't have access (nor could i find) a cam sprocket holding tool... Just been working on this thing as time permits this week. Thanks again!
EDIT-
Got both sprockets ALMOST there... I'm on the very right side edge of the tooth with the hash mark.. Close enough or do i need to start over again? These pictures distort the distance for whatever reason.... Its much closer than what it looks like in the pics.

Ok, remember Toyota uses Right and Left as if you are sitting in the driver seat....driver side = left, passenger side = right
I think you may have the belt on backwards. Do you?
Holding tool in post one here is simple to make and you will definately need it or something similar to hold the crank when torquing it.

Also, i don't have access to any pieces of metal like that to make the tool unfortunately...

What matters is not where the paint on the belt lines up, but where the marks on the cam pulleys line up to the backing plate and where the crank lines up when the belt is on.
If all three marks are at TDC after rotating the crank clockwise 2 full revolutions with the belt on and the tensioner pin pulled, you are good to go. If the marks are off a tooth, you will have to re-do it.
Can you take pics of the face of both cam pulleys and the crank mark?

Okay, got it as close as i could... This is with tensioner released and idler tensioner torqued down and two rotations of the engine. Once again, my phone makes it look way more off than it is, i am sitting on the Passenger side edge of the hash mark tooth.
Crank-
Passenger side cam-
Drivers-
Overview-
As you said about the painted marks not mattering, i assumethe painted belt marks are supposed to be off after two rotations?

Did you end up flipping the belt around?
To my eye, it looks like the L cam is possibly off by a tooth.

Yes, the belt is on correctly now! The L sprocket is at most, half a tooth off, but i dont think its even that much... which meansis i probably need to do it over again right?lol
EDIT- Quarter tooth off.

Haven't been able to do much this weekend, finals for my summer classes are this week so i've been busy getting ready for them! I'm also waiting on the tool to tighten down the crank bolt to come in... (ordered the 50 dollar schley hold tool) Ordered it at 5am friday morning and 2nd day air'd it thinking it would get here saturday, looks like it will be monday before it comes in, so i probably won't get a chance to finish until thurs-friday. Got all the accessories back on though!

If you guys want a good Toyota Tacoma engine, I would recommend http://www.alltoyotaengines.com or http://www.bestjapaneseengines.com. They carry low mileage Japanese engines for Toyota.
