2001 4runner hiccup/hesitation

I've had this problem for awhile now 6+months. I can be cruising around between 50-60mph and when i go to slowly speed up i have this hiccup/hesitation. More prone to do it if say I have cruise control on and i take it off and slightly accelerate. If I step on it it's fine, also somtimes it hesitates when taking off from a complete stop. I had a friend(mechanic) help me clean the maf and it was dirty and that seemed to help for a day or 2 but then it went back to the same thing and now it does it more often and sometimes above 60mph. Air filter is fine, any ideas what could be causing this? I use to get around 22mpg and then it went down to about 18-19mpg but I think thats mostly to putting on bigger 265/75 BF goodrich TA tires on it.
Kurt
p.s I've had this car for 2yrs bought it with 130k and put in a timing belt when I bought it and now I have 188k miles on it. Not done any work to it other than oil changes every 3-5k and new oem air filter every year and new brake pads.

I agree with the direction Hab is going. You need new plugs and wires.

Not sure if the plugs are oe but I think the wires are. I've yet to have a tune up since I bought it from the dealer. However the carfax showed all maintaince had been done by a toyota dealer and nothing major was repaired. Yesterday morning she was running a bit worse when i accelerated from a stop and i swear i heard a small backfire from the exhaust and once i thought i heard some kind of noise coming from the engine area can't quite describe the noise. I guess I can start with new wires and plugs and go from there. What kind of symptoms is it if I need say a new MAF or TPS ? maybe its a bad fuel injector or they just need to be cleaned?

Hate to bring up an old thread...but have you ever figured this out? My 2000 4runner is doing the same hesitation under light throttle. I cleaned my MAF and TPS....which helped for a day or two but its back.
