2001-2004 4 runner.. Good for towing?

I am looking into buying a newer 4 runner and I want to tow my popup with it. Are the transmissions strong enough for this?

Also what is the mileage like on models between 2001-2004 ?

Thanks

If the pop up is over 2,000 lbs, I'd strongly suggest getting a transmission cooler if you plan on towing. The A340F is a good transmission and will last you for a while given that you take care of it (via a transmission cooler) when towing. Otherwise you'll run into some major trans. problems.

maybe thats why my old baby 94 >200 k miles didn't seem to like it much.

Plus I live in the rockies. what about gas mileage? 94 gets about 12mpg

I towed the biggest Uhaul trailer all over Colorado and the Southwest, which certainly weighs more than a tent trailer. Aside from the absolutely gutless 5VZ, the truck did great.

A340 is one of the best autos out there. Used behind Lexus V8s, Supras, Subarus, Jeeps, etc. Bullet proof if you take care of it. The clutches in mine still looked new after 220K and a ton of abuse.

There are better tow vehicles.. The power becomes an issue. But besides that its the best car I've ever driven!

My dad works construction and pulls a trailer full of tools everyday with his truck and he's on his second 3.4 Auto combo over 200k miles (one a 97 T100, one a 2003 Tacoma) with no problems at all. His trailer is heavy enough that he has a brake controller wired up for his trailer.

if you get the 2003-2004 4Runner, get one with the 4.7L V8.. you'll be very happy with towing.. the 2001 model was only up to 2002 then a new model came in 2003 to 2009

Ditto on the cooler!! I have towed u-haul trailers, cars, boats, etc... with no problems. The gas mileage sucks, but that is to be expected.
