2000 4Runner Headlights: Switched Ground or Switched Power?

I got one of Roger Brown's Lighting Harnesses, and when I put it in, the Low beams dont work, and the high beams do. Im trying to figure out whats wrong here. The harness is made for a switched ground system. Is it possible that the 4Runner is a switched power system?

Your year model might be a switched power setup. On Roger's site, one of the paragraphs describe your issue... if low beam don't work after installing, you probably have a switched power system. It also gives instructions on converting the switched ground to switched power by tying two wires together and removing diode. Check his site for the details, I'm just passing along info from memory and I might not be totally accurate. Good Luck!

you have a test light? should be easy to probe the end of the bulb harness to determine if the if any of the wires are 12+ (Hot) all the time..

or you could use a relay to switch from grd to pos.

I know my headlights are switched ground (I had to set up a relay since Canada requires daytime running lights so I just set my headlights to come on automatically......I set up another switch to turn the relay off if I want to), but it may vary on different year 4runners. Just use a multimeter and probe for continuity to ground or check for voltage as a sign of switched power. A decent multimeter is only a few bucks at walmart.

Definitely ground switched, I have the wiring diagrams, but can't figure out how to get them in here. Send me an email address if you want a copy.

Edit, after looking again at the wiring diagrams the lights are only switched ground wihout DRLs, with DRLs they are switched power.

to bring back a dead thread.... If I had DRL's and disconnected them would I still have a switched power or would I have a switched ground? Thanks in advance guys

I want the answer to the above question!!! Also, has anybody done this wiring harness upgrade on a 96-98 with factory fog lights? When I cut on my fog lights, the brights come on... I am thinking I should just rewire my foglights. Can anyone recomend a good wiring harness that will work with our stock foglights in case I go that route? Does anyone have a clue why the little black box would start smoking when my fog lights come on? I am sure I have switched ground lighting system (I checked with a multimeter)
Thanks yotatech!
