From where is it leaking? Pinion seal, third member/axle housing seal, or axle seals?

Not exactly sure it gathers at the bottom of the diff though.
Hard to know for sure where it's coming from... I haven't had the opportunity to look under yet - just noticed a few drops had hit the ground.

I would have looked but I was late and there's a 2 week old dead rat next to the 4runner

...I know for sure that it's not the diff seal as that was just replaced a couple months ago.

Replaced two months ago might be why it is now leaking...perhaps improperly installed?

Wipe it down real good, follow the fluid path.

Good luck!

Make sure the breather isn't plugged, causing pressure in the rearend.

Brian:
I doubt that it's been put on incorrectly. It was done by Protrux in San Marcos (CA) and they have a really good reputation.

Gregg:
I was thinking that *might* be it. I did the extended diff breather mod but as far as I can tell the fuel line is not crimped anywhere.
I may just remove the breather and put a small air filter instead though.

It's easy enough to tell where it's coming from. You just have to get down there and look. There are only 2 possible sources, the pinion seal or the third member seal.

Also, if the breather tube has a low spot, oil vapor can build up and plug the hose.

Keep us posted Peter on what solves your problem. Sounds like only (3) things it could be.

Yeah, I'll have to try to take some time off this week to figure it out.

It's probably the pinion seal. Mine was leaking and it kept spraying up on my rear window when I was driving (Especially on the freeway). I replaced my third member seal and it didn't do it. While you're replacing the pinion, check the seals by the brake drums, mine went out about the same time and saturated all my brake junk with gear oil. Protrux is awesome, but no one is infaliable.....the 3rd could still be a possibility

The flange yoke may have a permanent groove from the seal. So replacing the seal might not work. They make a seal with a sleeve combo that might solve the problem if it turns out to be the pinion seal. The sleeve slides over the yoke giving it a new wear surface.

You know, this morning I just noticed that I am leaking from the front too. Smells like gear oil. I authorized the guys at Protrux to put in some flow additive in the gear oil for both diffs. Is it possible that this stuff might be causing the leak? I wasn't leaking in the front before...

Crawl under and see where it is coming from. Its either going to be on the very bottom only, or it will be running down the whole 3rd member from the pinion and dripping from the bottom of the housing. Or, if you actually took it to a shop to change your for you, they may not have tightened the drains all the way and it could be seeping past those.

Crawl under it, stare at it for a few seconds, poke it if it makes you happy, and report back where it is coming from.

I don't have anything going on Saturday - I'll be able to check it out then.
Was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem?

Okay... it looks like I'm leaking in the rear right where the carrier meets the rear diff and in the front slightly where the passenger side drive shaft meets the front diff.

I also noticed one of the boots on the passenger CV is torn too :pat:

Ok, so its the gasket in between the 3rd and the housing in the rear. First try tightening up the nuts to see if that fixes it. Wipe down all the oil after your done. Drive it on the highway for 15 minutes or so and come back and check it. If it still leaks, you'll have to pull the 3rd and reseal it. You can either use another paper gasket, FIPG, or both.

On the front, sounds like your oil seal in the diff for the CV shaft is shot. You'll have to pull the shaft and replace the seal.

Look closely for cracks on the CV boots. If you see no cracks, look at the ends of the boots where the clamps are. Sometimes the clamps can come loose and oil will leak out of the ends. Get a basic steel hose clamp from the hardware store and install it over the end, and that should seal it back up. If its cracked, then you will need a new boot which will require pulling the CV and disassembling it. Or you can buy either a used complete shaft online from someone used here on the board, or from a place like AutoZone, or from a junkyard. But beware on the used ones. I got one from a junkyard about 3 or 4 months ago to put on my mom's car and it has already split.

Pardon my ignorance but FIPG?

As for the CV boots - they all have some *minor* cracks but the one I'm talking about has ripped almost all the way around. I can see the steel ring on one side, the rest on the other, and grease in between.

Looks like I'll have to look up a CV write-up.
