Hello,

I just a bought a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 2WD with 93,000 on the odometer, which is my third Toyota pickup and my 4th Toyota vehicle. This time is primarily for my driving ONLY. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/imag...lies/smile.gif

I am interested in modifications for off-road while keeping it primarily for highway driving to and from work.

Has anyone done upgrades to tires, wheels on this model without the big jump to lift kit and spindles and steering extensions? I want to add 15-17 inch wheels and tires without the lift as a first step.

Other items that I plan to add are air conditioning, custom seat cover for my cloth seat, of course, K&N mod.

Appreciate advice on wheels, tires, seat cover and air for now.

Eventually might beef up suspension and lift for more durable off-roading but I am not sure where I will shop for all of the parts. I might just keep it all as stock pickup and go back and forth between off-road conversions and road conversions when I feel like it. I am not sure how much of a project I want to make this yet. Might save it all for a winter indoor project.

I'm a little confused, a 2WD truck is never going to be a very good off-road vehicle. I suppose putting some A/T or mud tires would help... but without 4WD it's not going to do everything you want it to. Are you thinking larger tires just for looks?

Looks and off road with A/T tires are what I am after - yes. I have been off road with the early 90's models and 22RE w/2WD in the past - it's fine for any putting around in snow, mud, or rocks that I do. For example, a load of wood or to fishing or hunting. I usually had plenty of weight in the back.

By the way, the desert runners don't use 4x4, correct? They beef up the suspension and change gearing but don't use 4x4?

Yea, a lot of desert trucks are 2wd.

Rear locker or limited slip will really help.

Look up total chaos for expensive long travel stuff.
