What do you people think of the 1998 4wd limited V6 4runner? What about one with 70000 miles? What kind of things would you people be weary of, or specifically look for?

The guy is asking 14900, KBB puts it between 12900 and 14100 depending on how I condigure the options and condition.

I'm planning on running a Ccarfax and checking to see if recalls have been done (can I call the toyota dealer with a VIN and have them tell me that? if not where else can I get such information?)

If the carfax were to come up clean what would you guys offer them? What "flaws" would you point out to get the price lower?

I guess what I'm thinking is: What they heck do you people have for overall input? anything is welcome!

70000 on a '98 is pretty good and the price isn't bad and I'm sure Limiteds already have the rear locker.

Not all Limiteds have the locker, but if this has one, its worth the extra money. The mileage is low, too; avg. for a 6-7 year old truck is 90-105,000 miles @15k miles/year. I'd go for it if the CarFax is clean, especially if its been a Florida truck its whole life so you won't have to deal with rust issues & such.

I paid almost 36k cdn for my '97 Limited last year with 80,00km on the odometer. I say go for it!

Huh...Are you serious??? Not so fast my friend (in your best Lee Corso voice) ever wonder why they call Florida the swamp? I can bet you it's not because its especailly dry there...Rust would be one of the first things I would look for in any vehicle from Florida!!!

Hello. I just bought a 98 limited with 74,000 miles from a Toyota dealer for $17,200. I'm very happy with mine. It was/is pretty immaculate though. It also had all of the options offered above the "limited" package, (according to this site:http://www.top4runners.com/ja/runhist/1998opt.html They are: sun roof, rear heater, 3 in 1 premium sound, metallic paint, tow package, & of course locking rear diff. Actually area like Colorado/Arizona are least likely to have rust since humidity is so low;I've seen metal parts of vehicles in Florida that just rust from humidity.

Look it over and give it a ride if you haven't yet. I boght my 98 Ltd with 78k last month and now at 80k wish I had bought one years ago. No rear locker with mine but I aint complaining.

late reply re: FL and rust...

there is, of course, a big difference between the kind of rust that'll develop in FL (humidity) and the kind that'll build up in areas where snow falls and lots of SALT is dumped on the roads. it can eat a vehicle alive. lots of the 4runners in my area have big honkin' holes in 'em.

my 93 is originally from FL and now has a home here in NE where we just got another nor'easter this weekend. no body rust, but a little underneath. still, for 10 years old it's nothing.

Depending on the vehicle condition; if you can bring the price down for about 1k, go for it. Last June, I bought my '00 LTD 4WD with locker for $17.5K with 65K miles on it. Now it has about 71K happy miles.

Good luck...yeah a call to the dealer should tell weather all recalls has been done to it...if no, just drop it at the dealer for a day or so, they will take care of it.

I did that with mine and will probably do the same with the next one.

Had a 98 Limited and loved it. If my 03 Limited came with some of the stuff the 98 had, I'd be even happier. If it checks out, and has had the rear suspension recall done, negotiate a bit and buy it.

Dont forget about the maintenance that will need to be immediately done if you buy a truck with this mileage, and they cannot prove it has been done...

Timing belt
Water pump
All oils
Coolant
Plugs
etc.

Now you are out another $600 on top of what you just dropped on the rig. Something to keep in mind.

That's one thing nice about Colorado is that they don't use salt,we use sand which kinda sucks cause it's all over the road throughout winter til spring when they clean it up. They also use a chemical de-icer around the metro Denver area and so far that hasn't resulted in ill effects on vehicles.
