1997 4 Runner - Looking to buy, need input

Hey everyone,

I'm not too familiar with toyotas, I was going after a tacoma but found a 4 Runner. It seems to land in the low - average price for the online KBB and NADA but hits very low here in Portland.

They are asking $8500 for:

Excellent Condition! 145,000 miles, V6 3.4 liter, automatic, 4WD, white with tan interior, sliding sun roof, AC, power steering, power windows, power door locks, tilt wheel, cruise control, AM/FM stereo, cassette, single compact disc, dual front air bags, ABS (4-wheel), roof rack, privacy glass, running boards, towing pkg, alloy wheels.

It truly is in excellent condition, but I am just a little nervous about this higher milage. I know its a toyota but...

Thanks!

Justin

no worries at 145k on a 3.4L.

by the way, that's the same engine as in the tacoma.

only thing you'd get w/ a TRD tacoma is a rear locker - and this one may or may not have it. if it doesn't you can always retrofit one or get an arb.

i have just over 150k on mine. zero troubles. zero problems. it's given me over 64k of reliable toyota service over the last 2-1/4 years and i would have no issue getting in it and driving cross-country. from thanksgiving thru mid january, i took it on three family trips, totalling about 4200 miles.

Totally agree with bamachem's post. Sounds like a decent deal if you are going for an auto. Just make sure that a 4-Runner is what you want. Although its still a yota powered by the same drivetrain; there is a lot of difference between it and a Taco.

Excellent condition also means that it needs nothing and the maintenance is all up to date. Good luck

Thanks guys

I think the Runner will fit the bill better than the taco. I'm a photographer and simply need space for surf boards up top and cameras in back. a small OMe lift and tiress and I should be set.

I'm kinda bummed on the auto but 5 speeds are tough to find...

i bought a 1996 limited with everything, 132,500 miles and it was 7,700 after tax 8,600 hundred got some new shocks new tires new stereo system, new brakes and new axle seals, and what do u mean by excellent did u get under the car and look for oil leaks, check under the hood everything like that valve cover gaskets (had that replaced to) the biggest thing is check the back axle and see if anything dripping from the brakes, make sure its a smooth ride and doesnt need new shocks and struts if this is all fine then i would buy it because after i put all that into my runner i paid about $12,000 just depends on ur budget but those are things u need to lookout for

NO on the OME lift.

either 1.5-2" with a performance products lift or go up to 2 full inches w/ a Sonoran Steel "All Toyota" kit. you won't be disappointed. you could also just do a 1, 1.5 or 2 inch body lift for about $120 to $180 depending on lift and options.

I did check all those things, it doesn't seems to have any leaks but it is going to the mechanic tommorrow.

Why no on the OME? I've always heard and had great success with them with my Rovers and Jeeps.
