Cool 1997 2.7 Liter 2wd - blown head?

All roads lead to this site so I humbly signed up to mine for knowledge!

My '97 2runner was running odd so I did plugs N wires, oil et all - ran like a champ!
3 months latter she turns over odd, then produces steam out the pipe while I watch the temp and hobble a short way home.

A turn of the engine with the number 1 (closest to front grill) plug removed produces water! They all (4) compression check 120 - 180ish. The oil on the dip looked good, honey brown with no sign of water.

So with more time than money ATM, and some wrenching experience I have decided to see if I can handle the repair myself. I took pictures before starting and used color tape to mark a few hoses as I get the lay of the land...

Hopefully I can find a guide or some guidance as I get deeper into the job. The runner has about 94K on it and the exhaust manifold had to be replaced 5 years ago.

I'll need torque settings and suggestions along the way if anyone can spare a bloody knuckled old hippie a few kind words. Will trade for other knowledge - 3D modeling, photography,. etc.

Guess I better get busy searching and reading...

This would be a good place to start, Should have any and all tourqe specs you need.

Also, Troll around over at TTORA.com and see if you can find anything regarding a top end rebuild..

Welcome, good luck and keep us updated !

Thats because its for 01-04 Tacomas

The 2.7 is Named the 3RZ-FE, So mainly everything in that link I posted that regards the 3RZFE will be the same for your engine..

Some electronics were changed IIRC, But the tourque specs and diagrams are the same and will help you !!

if coolant flows through the throttle body and or the intake manifold then you might want to check that first, could be something as simple as an intake manifold gasket

Cool, and cool - thanks. I will keep that in mind as I study the provided links and diagrams.

Guess I better eat, then get dirty!... something simple(er) would be sweet!

Got the throttle body off, injectors, PS pump, ignition...

So check this, when I squeeze the the water hose intake, gas is pumped out the fuel lines!

Sure hope that is normal...

Is that a torquez stud on the exhaust manifold?

Blood and grease and expected!

I think it is all the short trips she has seen, and I did have a skinny girlfriend at the end of a long bumpy road.. and I don't think I was hard on the truck, never off road'd for sport, no river crossings...

Guess I'll pull the exhaust mani now...

Cool

Does this look like the right TDC position for marking the chain? Notice the off color link.

Looks like maybe the pulley was flipped?,.. at any rate I left it alone and rebuilt in this position with great success,.. in case anybody ends up using the pictures as a reference...

Did the water pump, two of the pulleys, new belts, fuel filter et all..

The head damage was not very obvious and just barely out of spec, she never overheated but was in a small front end collision @2,500 miles, perhaps setting this premature failure into motion. I just had it surfaced and left the valves alone.

BTW - This repair took me 4.5 months! Because I had to chase work and sell stuff to afford the parts. I now have 15" calves from cycling everywhere.

P.S. the thermostat has not opened yet judging from the lack of hose temp, but the temp is low so perhaps this is normal on a 20 minute drive?
