Bite the bullet, get a catalytic converter. The use of a vehicle on public roads without a catalytic converter is illegal. It is a violation of federal law to gut a catalytic converter. And it's environmentally irressponsible to run a vehicle without one.

96 tacoma

I know that it isnt the the thing to do but I dont want to shell out $425 for a converter at this point. This summer I am going to be putting a 302 V8 into it so if I can get buy till then it would really help.

Get a high flow cat, they are around $100-120... If you gut it out I think it will screw with the O2, on my 94 22RE the previous owner gutted it out, you could tell when you knocked on the cat (sounded hollow), plus the exhaust was much richer smelling. We don't have emmision testing in NH, but I hear it's coming soon.

Why do you need a new one?

Somebody's ripping you off if they want you to pay $425 for a new cat. Or you're at a dealership. And, no matter what engine you use, you'll be able to use the same cat (though you may need to have a different size inlet or outlet if you change the size of your exhaust - but you'd still be able to use the same core).

You can get a high-flow cat with either 2-1/2" pipe or 3" pipe from Road Race Engineering

I need a new one because I think that it is getting plugged up. I am not getting as good gas milage and have noticed it leaking around the converter. I have been to auto zone and checked it for codes and it showed everything being OK. I baby this truck on maintinance, Amsoil, bosch, and all the good stuff to keep it running like new. It has 113,000 miles on it so i am sure that it is due for one. Michigan does not test so it should be OK if I gutt it.

My 98 2.7 with 140K is the same way, no codes or CEL on. I go through front exhaust donuts, I am putting her up forsale so I'm not sure if I will put a new cat on. Do you feel like you have lost power too? Drop in mileage could be many things...

Tacoma

I am willing to bet that your 98 is plugged also. That is why your frount exhuast dougnut is going bad. It just has to much back presure. I just hope this gutting wont mess up my O2.

I would just take it off and see if you can unplug it first before you gut it, or try turning it around. If not just take a 1" bit and drill threw it.

if you gut the cat you will get a code like "catalyst efficiency below threshold" OBDII is very picky of these things

If you take out or gut the cat you will get a code. You can get a new cat for $100 from Catco.

Definately get an aftermarket high flow cat......you can use it later with the swap as well.
Your emissions will not be very good at all without it.
