1996 4Runner ECU - have to reprogram?

I've been learning a lot about ECUs lately Based on what I read, if you have to replace the ECU, the dealer needs to program it. Most of my reading, the programming involves setting up the immobilizer for the security system. But I admit to ignorance here. I'm just trying to get the damn thing running again.

So, I have a 89661-3D150 ECU. Based on what I read, this is the one for a V6,AT, 4WD SR5. The one that was in my car has had one of its ignition outputs killed. So, it has to go out for repair. Because I was in a hurry, I decided to try and pick up a used one off ebay ($135 risk level, why not?). The engine runs now, but runs very poorly and throws a "cannot sense camshaft position error". This according to the shop (who won't get any more of my business) who gave it a try. Of course, I have no idea if the used unit is bad.

But, I was wondering - is there some special programming for the ecu that needs to be done such that it would work? I've read other people saying that obtained a used ecu - exact part match - and their truck ran fine.

Appreciate your thoughts

I don`t know about the newer ones maybe you are correct!! With a factory Alarm .

I know the older ones you just plugged the correct part # one in and were good to go.

Do you have a good relationship with your local dealer?? Call and ask the Service manager.

Just for my own peace of mind I want to find out be good to know.

Yes any ECU with a alarm unless you get the remotes needs to be reprogramed so the vehicle remotes are able to communicate with it .

Then all works like it should Other wise the vehicle remains disabled.

If this was not the case the whole alarm could be rendered useless just by swapping ecu units
