1987 pickup questions

My friend has a '87 toy pickup. Ridiculously low miles (138,000), and good shape body and rust wise.

But the darn thing has had the engine replaced about 40,000 miles ago, and now the mechanic is telling the trany is shot, the transfer case is shot, a wheel bearing is shot, leaking oil here and there, water pump leaking...

I don't know anything about this year of truck (I'm a 4runner guy, sorry!)

Now, this all seems quite weird to me... the truck hasn't been neglected, oil changes and all that. (not sure about the major stuff, honestly; didn't ask).

The mechanic gave him the "cost way more than it's worth" speech (he said it would cost around 4K to fix). And further said it was worth about 1K as it was. (It still drives ok, but it's got probs!)

So tell me about the '87 pickup. Did it have a history of bad engine/transmission stuff?

What should it cost to get a remanufactured (or other cheap) transmission and t-case in there?

Uh. let's see... 2.4L manual 4wd SR5... what else do you need to know?

As far as i know its got the same engine and everything as my truck, which is an 88 and i dont know of these trucks having lots of problems like that. My truck as around the same milage and was abused before i got it and it still runs great after a little tlc. If i were you i would see a second and maybe a third mechanic. Also your friend can probly do alot of the work on the truck himself if he is mechanically inclined. Good luck and dont give up on that Yota . Let me know what he ends up doin.

Yea probably, but i just checked www.car-part.com for tranny/tcase combos and a bunch came up ranging from 795 to 450, and also call for price.

What else is wrong?

no these trucks are very reliable. and to only have 130,??? miles this is odd. my 86 4runner has just about 170000 on it and it still has all the power in the world. only needed a waterpump and clutch 6000 miles ago. i think that this mechanic is screwing with u guys. but u should check out www.marlincrawler.com if u need a tranny or t-case. also my dads had 2 of the 2nd generation body style and both his motors lasted till 180,000. and ive seen numerous around with 200000 plus miles.

o and one more thing. all those leaks are most likely just simple and cheap gaskets that need to be replaced. i think ebay has a complete gasket kit for the 22re for like $150-200

Nah, extremely reliable and long lasting. As long as there aren't other factors? Chip a tooth on the reverse gear while goofing off and let it ruin the tranny bearings? (things like that is what I mean...) I put 172,000 on my 85 4Runner - it now has 240k on it. Going strong. The usual stuff of course - water pump, oil pump etc at appropriate mileages, but nothing ever went on it until around 125, then it was things that you expect to fix. My father has almost 300k on his 85 XtraCab and he neglects it and abuses it. He believes if it ain't broke don't mess with it, and it just won't break. Looks like hell but runs and runs... The 22re/5sp setup is a good one. Tell your mechanic you'll be puttin your own kids through college, thanks, not his...
