Just got an 18" Magnaflow muffler installed today with a custom tip for $200. (For those that responded to my previous post about dual exhausts, I kept it stock and just slipped a tip on).

I have a 3.4L V6. The entire car is stock, except for the muffler which I added on.

I already checked the soundbyte page. I love how it's louder and deeper than the stock muffler (well of course...), but my 18" Magnaflow muffler didn't sound like the one posted on that website. It has a nice bass note, but sounds very ricey and it's very loud in the cabin and drones horribly at highway speeds. (I want my truck to sound like a truck, not an oversized riced out Honda Civic. Please save the "get a V8 then" and "it's going to sound ricey because it is one" comments for another thread). Upon paying for the installation, the mechanic said if I didn't like the sound, I could just bring it back and swap it out for another muffler, free of charge.

I'm considering either the Flowmaster 40 series or Flowmaster 50 SUV. If you have input, personal experience, etc. on either of these mufflers, please let me know. I know the 40 is very loud as that's what everyone claims, but is it loud in the cabin and is the drone noticeable? How about sound at low RPMs and sound at high RPMs? What about the Flowmaster 50? Is it quiet in the cab, but does it still produce a growl?

ive ran a 40 series on several vehicles.. they are a little loud, but i like to hear my car so i know if its running alright. i bet a 50 series would be a little less loud, more on the bassy..

if you just got it installed give it time that packing has to settle and stuff i was disappointed when i got mine installed but after a few weeks it sounded much better

Is yours loud inside the cabin? This is actually my first truck and first time putting mods on so I don't know what to expect. All I know is that it's loud in the cabin and it sounds like my friend's riced out Civic. It does, however, sound pleasant on the outside, but the drone in the cabin is kind of ridiculous because I have to yell over the muffler to talk to the person right next to me. Of course, I could go 24" or the Flowmaster 50 series, but going 24" Magnaflow would be just a bit louder than stock? I still want that low end growl and high end roar, but just without it being too loud in the cab.

I have a flowmaster 40 on my 2.7L. It' sounds a little ricey when I draw out the gears a little, like when shifting around 4k rpms. It still drones at highway speeds, but around the city and at idle, it sounds like a truck truck. I like it a lot, and get a lot of compliments.

It may sound better with the 3.4L, not sure. I have some video to show how loud it is, I just haven't really cared enough to load it up.

have you done the deckplate and isr mod ? that makes it sound awesome too

I went thru the same thing. It did mellow out a bit after a couple days. At times it seems ricey but Im getting used to it. The initial shock of the sound was tough. I was very disappointed for a day or two but I really think it does mellow after a bit of use.

I went with the 50 series flowmaster for my 2.7 after my gibson rusted out. I didnt want that drone that you speak of and I have been satisfied with it since day 1. My opinion is to stick with the 50 series. You wont be disappointed.

flowmaster 50 on mine...sounds nice, deeper rumble but noticable. Its not bad at highway speeds and it dosen't sound ricey....I hate ricey. My .02

Delta Flow or SUV series? I like growling at low RPMs and minimal sounds inside. Is that what you get?

The 24" gives you a lot of growl and high-end roar, but it still resonates in the cab.

How much louder than the 18"? I'm actually getting used to the resonance in the cab, but still a bit loud for my preference. Would it quiet down after a bit?

Got the Flowmaster 50 Delta Flow to replace my Magnaflow 18" and I love it. It's much quieter in the cabin, but I can still hear it and it still gives me the roar of the engine I'm looking for. Up next... headers.

Side note: My mechanic told me my 4Runner has 2 cats and that I need a special cat since I live in California. Could someone elaborate on this? I thought all 3rd gen 4Runners only had 1 cat?

You need to let it break in, the magnaflows need a little time to break in. I had the 14 inch installed on my 3.4 and it was awful loud in the cab after a couple weeks its perfect. Perfect tone outside and you only really hear it on the inside when im really on it. Stick with the magnaflow over the flowmaster
