I hit the 150,000 mile mark last night while travelling a particularly dark, desolate stretch of highway. That made me think about where I might be had I kept the Chevy, or had I bought a Jeep...such as broken down on the side of the road. Here's to Toyota reliability!

It is possible. My friend puts on 35k a year on his car. His job makes him drive all over the NE. He maintains his cars well too. You got to remember it is highway mileage so things don't wear as fast as you think they do.

Yeah, but a 2002 with 490K? Do the math! That would be about about 165K miles/year if he's had it for 3 years or 123K/year if he had it for 4 years. That's 4-5 times more per year then your friend... Sounds like bull to me.

I worked with a company who put a million miles on a car for oil test marketing. Funny thing was, they did it on the Dyno.

So, for fun, they took it to the dealer for a service so the folks could see a million mile car with barely broken in brakes and shocks, perfect paintwork and an interior that barely looked sat it.

Led to some head scratching

I have a mere 170,100 on my newly acquired 93.

Congrats...I am about to hit 140k, so I will be in the 150k club soon. This got me thinking though, many people when they hit their 25th or 50th wedding anniversary will share the things they feel were instrumental in helping it last that long...do you care to share what you have done to provide the longevity in your period of ownership of your truck?

Ok, I screwed up ...It was a 2000 , not an 02. But it still had 490 K.

wow.... thats still driving 223.7 miles everyday... including holidays to get 490,000 miles in 6 years... damn....

490,000/6 = 81,667 miles per year
81,667 /365 = 223.7 miles per day

thats about $32 in gas per day


not to mention the $68055.55 he spent on gas in 6 years

my 85 xcab has 250,000 + now , my 94 4 runner has 150,000 and my 2000 taco has 82,000 miles . i live in alaska do alot of driving ,nothing is close to home . but they all get me home !

My '86 just turned over 111,000...

Also my moto only has 6k on it....got it 3yrs ago with 1800

Some people drive a lot though....My 88 year old Grandpa jsut lost his license....had a 97 taco with like 170,000 miles...may not sound like a lot at only like 20,000 miles a year, but HE'S 88.....thats either good or scary

i know several people who have jeeps and chevys with well over 250k miles on them and they aren't broken down on the side of the road.

I bought the rig 1.5 years ago, so I'm largely not responsible for the excellent care it has received over the years. The girl I bought it from was a typical daddy's girl...every time she told daddy she heard a squeak, he took it to the dealership. You should see the folder full of receipts, work orders, etc. I inherited. Yea, they wasted some serious cash, but they also took great care of the truck. I don't believe it ever saw a muddy trail under her ownership. I I guess the best things I've done to ensure long life:

1. had the rig thoroughly checked by a mechanic after the test
drive but before committing to buy it,

2. added a Hayden stacked plate tranny cooler

3. not driving it like a sportscar...I can do that when I buy something in a V12
or 427 V8.

4. drive it for a few miles in 4WD during months where I don't
make it to the trail (keeps everything well-lubed).

Anyone else care to chime in here?

because more toyotas will actually get to those high mileage marks then most domestics....

Yes i know of a late 70s chevy pickup that has 450K on the clock... i know of 1 only 1. My 4runner is chasing him down and I know 2 other yotas closing in on that mark very rapidly.

I kinda like GMs stuff, but...nothing will match a toyotas reliability unless its an early honda or volvo.

My "complex" comes from my own experience. I've owned rigs from all the big 3 U.S. makers, and none of them came close to being as trouble free as my 2 Yotas. Heck, all you have to do is some research...source after source I reviewed before my first Yota purchase told me what I could expect...years of hassle-free driving with minor regular maintenance.

If only my K-5 Blazer had been built by Toyota....o, the possibilities!
