01 Ignition Key will not turn off all the way

01 Ignition Key will not turn off all the way stops at accessory, although I can disconnect the positive battery cable then I can turn the key on then back to off and remove the key. I'm guessing it either has something to do with the alarm or the gear shift not engaging into park correctly. once I reconnect the battery the alarm is on but I have removed the fuse to the horn for now. I bought the truck with 100K now has 300K miles Prerunner V6 SR5 Auto. I'm stumped. I do not know if its a factory alarm, I'm thinking its an aftermarket?? I have not dropped any dash panels under the steering yet. Would a scanner read any codes for this kind of issue. Thanks Al

Yes! Mine is an automatic and its the gear shift mechanism. Took the console cover off and for now I tightened the screws but also added a small shim under left screw common to the floor pan. It needs to be replaced entirely. Its really weird thing sometimes if truck is parked on a slope it still does it occasionally. Very sensitive

This sounds like a shiftier issue. On my 90 4runner, I can not remove the key unless it is in park. It is possible the bushings are completely shot.

My problem is definitely the shifter bushing, I suppose the temporary fix was the shim. Hope I can just replace the bushing eventually. I could turn my key enough to stop the engine couldn't turn it off and remove the key unless I disconnected the battery. Took me forever to figure that out.

Shifter Bushing

Was wondering if either of you guys have replaced the bushing in the shifter assy. I've started searching for parts on line but nothing yet. If I take my console cover off again I'll try and post a part number. May have to go to the local salvage yard

There is a walk through for my model, but I do not know of one for 3rd gen trucks and 4runners. Parts are cheap, labor is not

Shifter Bushing

There's a you tube video of a guy that walks you thru the whole thing except mine is not a 4 wheel drive. You have to start with probably going to the dealer to get the bushings. His was blue looked like nylon polyurethane. Also you have to disconnect the shift linkage from underneath the truck, just a snap ring or he called it a c-clip. Because the way its designed you have to pull the entire thing up high enough for access to get the old ones out and pop the new ones in. The video has a rooster crowing in the back ground. Worth watching
