Yes the 2001-2002 style tail lamp will physically perfectly fit the 1996-2000 model, but there are a few things that you will need to buy/change.

1) The wiring harness for the 2001-2002 style tail lamps is different because the reverse light bulb is a 921 instead of the 7440 that the 1996-2000 tail lamps use. If you do not want to purchase the wiring harness, maybe you can find Toyota style mini wedge bulb sockets at a junk yard and splice them in....just make sure the socket mates properly with the tail lamp housing first.

2) You will need to purchase 7440 AMBER bulbs for the 2001-2002 turn signal. The 1996-2000 use 7440 clear bulbs because there is an orange plastic shield built into the actual tail lamp.

If the taillights have the wiring harness and bulbs, its a plug and play setup.

The connector to plug into the main body harness is the exact same from 96-02. The only difference is the bulbs, but as an assembly with wiring, it will plug right in no problem.

When I ordered my new tail lights from Toyota, I had to order the tail lamp and wiring harness as two different items. They didn't come as one and they have separate part numbers. I initially thought that if I ordered just the tail lamp, that the proper wiring harness would come with it as well, but it didn't. As far as the bulbs go, you would think that Toyota would include the bulbs with the wiring harness, but they don't.

Toyota sells them seperatly, AND together as well.

One comes as a "lens only" and the other is a "taillight assembly"

The assembly comes with the wiring AND the bulbs, unless Toyota has changed it within the last week or so.

Hmm...It would have been nice to buy everything together! Thanks for the info. Next time I'm at my Toyota parts place I'll ask about it. I think the reason things are packaged differently might be because I'm in BC, Canada.
