smilen724's 1993 4runner Build Thread

Hola!
This is my build thread for my 93 4runner. I haven't decided on a name for it yet, you guys can help with that! This is my second Toyota crawler build so far, following a full size chev and a Cherokee (I know). So here it is:

My 86 has been starting get pretty beat up and I'm just getting bored with it and want to build something new and clean. So I picked up this 1993 4runner SR5 off some guy on CL, body has like 270k but its in really good shape and the interior is tits. The guy had it listed for $1000 and was saying the 3.0l (which was rebuilt 50k ago w/ receipts ) had a "blown engine and wont start or run or do anything". So I got him down to $700 and loaded it up. This guy was the original owner and gave me a stack of receipts dating back to the mid 90s that was 3" thick. So when I got this thing home I wanted to diagnose it so I hooked it up to a battery charger and after about 15 minutes the thing fired right up! and it runs perfect. might need a new clutch in the near future. But other than the clutch, its in damn good shape! Here are some pictures of what it looked like when I brought it home. Had an ugly front brush guard and the running boards still on it.

Only took a few minutes an a impact to pull that bumper off and the running boards off. Also gave it a bath and it cleaned up pretty well. It came with a decent set of BFG all terrains! But they wont stay on there very long lol

My first step is yardin the front axle, engine, trans, tcase, sound system and whatever else I might want off the 86 so I can slap it under this 4runner. Well, actually the only thing i'll be using are the axles and sound system. The engine, trans and tcase I'm selling to help fund the runner . Heres a pic of the 86, that's my girlfriend/copilot in the passenger seat lol. And a pic of the 4runner with a 35 stuffed under it

Made some more progress last night. Not exactly related to the 4runner but still kind of is. I started pulling everything off my '86 last night so I can sell it and fund the 4runner I've only got a little work left before the engine, trans and tcase are ready to pull then i'll clean em up and sell. Next, i'll be pulling the front axle out and tearing it down to re-seal and put new bearings in and paint . In the mean time, my brother has been driving my 4runner the last few days and the next couple days cause his 3.0 in his '91 pick up blew a head gasket lol (shocker i know). Since he's been doing that in the shop, that's why I'm working on the 86 outside. What you cant see in the pics is the circle of buddies sitting there drinking beer watching me work hahah.

Thanks Bump! I was actually just checking out your build thread the other day and your 4runner is a lot like what I have in mind for this! except I think I'm going to go with the 3.4l swap route considering a have a 3.4 core laying around. I should be getting more work done on it tonight so i'll have another update soon!

This weekend was definitely another good one for the books! We got this idea that the 4runner needed to be sitting stock stuffing 35s haha so we jacked her up and got to cuttin.

35 vs 31

We decided to cut along the old trim line.

cut.

then rolled the fender.

before cutting.

after cutting and rolling. and smashing some stuff back lol.

So after doing that most of friday night and saturday morning, heres how she sat on all four 35s.

after wheeling around the yard and still rubbing on every bump, we decided the 35s were too much for now. even though it looked bad ass low and slow . so we took the 32' bfg ATs off my brothers toyota and put the 35s on his (which he was stoked on). So heres how it sat on 32s

Then we decided to all grab our rigs and head out wheelin saturday afternoon which turned into an all night trail repair Heres some wheelin pics

32 clears nicely.

cant really see the culvert we dip through right here.

we also sticker bombed that back fairing piece

So after wheelin down this snotty, rooted, fairly steep trail, my buddies Mazda B2600, which is actually a really bad ass rig, snapped a tie rod. After a while a trying to rig something we up, we couldn't get anything to work. Since we still had phone service, we called our buddy and had him grab a generator and welder and start making the trip to where we were. Its about an hour a half drive to get to where we were at, not to mention he got lost for an hour. So, in the mean time we built a fire and had plenty of beer for a good time! After waiting for a few hours, he finally shows up and we get going on welding wrenches, scrap steel, and anything else to the tie rod by this time its about 10pm and we are still in the middle of nowhere. We got here all back together and it worked killer! but we were still down this gnarly trail which after everyone getting buried in mud at one point, took us about another 1.5 hours to get out of the trail. The 4runner did pretty good! Heres more pics

I'll have to get some pics of the welded together tie rod. After awhile of getting out of the trail, the welded tie rod bent and the end. So we decided to leave the mazda at a near by gravel pit and come get it the next day since we were still about 1.5 hours from home and 15 miles up a logging road.

Made for quite the weekend! not exactly build related but it was the first time wheeling the 4runner and its just too good not to share!

Well this last week has been pretty busy with work and family stuff so I haven't had much time for 4runner stuff. However, I got the engine, trans and tcase pulled out of my 86 and got them SOLD . Then friday night we decided a trip up the mountains was much needed so we went out drivin! only got this picture lol

Then Saturday got the front axle pulled off the 86 and started tearing it down to rebuild and paint. I should be making a big order for new parts here soon!
