Psyche's 1990 4Runner Build-Up Thread

So, I'm not exactly new here, (first post though!) I just have never made an account. But I thought I would, since I finally found myself a 4runner, and this site has awesome members. It's a 1990, 4runner. It has 305,000 miles. I know that's a lot, but hey, it's a Toyota right? haha. I got it for 1100, I think I got a steal. It runs great, no problems so far. I've had it for a 2 weeks now. When I got it, it came with new spark plugs and wires, new fuel filter, Megatron II battery. The interior is incredibly clean, I haven't found one cleaner, inside and out. It's power everything, moon roof, and the rear tire... uhh... holder? It's completely stock, which I like so I can do the work, or pay someone I know who will do a good job, and make sure it gets done right.

I plan on getting new tires and rims 32's on 15's, a 2.5? 3 inch? lift. And when the time comes I'll rebuild the engine when it needs it. I'll also do little stuff, I'll put in a nice sound system and maybe get a roof rack or basket for it. New Exhaust as well.

Well so here is what I have now. I took the step ups off by the way.

I'll get better pictures soon and show the interior. Probably tomorrow.

Well, in the past week or so. I have ordered:

New Clear corners

New tires --- I went with 31x10.5x15 Wrangler Authority. This is my DD/camping/light wheeling rig. So I didn't need muds, and since this tire is like a hybrid and I have only heard of one person having trouble with these tires, I thought I'd grab em. Only $125 each at wal mart, plus the balancing and installation.

I also got new rims, I'm sellings my stock alloys for 75$ to a buddy I work with for his 95 runner. I got 5, so I'll have one for the spare.

I also plan on buying a Yakima Loadwarrior soon.
Everything should be here by the end of the month, so pictures soon!

Well, I got the rims and tires on. Looks really good. They also feel really good. They're 31x10.5x15 with no rubbing at all. They feel good on the highway. When I get more then 30 miles on them I'll give more updates on them.

But, I did go up on some very mild trails up on granite mountain. Most of the good stuff was blocked off by trees... But they did very good when my brothers AT's were slipping really bad, and mine none at all. My truck did lose some power though. Going on the steeper roads (even paved) I had to shift down. It's a bummer, maybe new gears are needed? Oh well. Rebuild of the motor coming in the next few months.

Anyways, here's some pics.

After I went up to granite, picture taken at night.

Thanks! And I haven't really decided yet. Maybe just a flowmaster 40 series. I got a couple more days to decide... haha

Lmao, yeah.... that wasn't a serious picture by the way, just to give him a little credit. lol.

And yeah I was looking those up too. But I don't want it to be to louuuddd. I want it to sound good more than anything. And I don't want to be the honda with the rice burner sounding like he's going 300 miles per hour when he's making a right turn into wal mart lol.

Okay, so I used to go up hills somewhat okay. Now with the bigger tires it's pretty rough. Even in third. Should I get 4.29 gears? I don't really know much about it.

Yeah, I do like that sound. I just don't want it that loud....I think. haha. How much would those gears cost to put in? And, yeah, it's pretty bad. I can't accelerate in 5th gear at all now haha. When I'm on the highway I use it when I'm going down hills. It runs good(well it's reliable anyways.), it's just gutless. It does have some miles on it though so it's pretty worn.

But for the shape the color, the interior is in, and how clean the engine is. And even just because it's still running. I think it might have been towed behind something/stored in the garage. It was incredibly well taken care of to last this long.

Soo....my driver's window got stuck down for the passed couple days. turns out it was the motor. So yay, picked up a new one and it's fixed. Annnnnd my rear window will only go down if I rev the engine up and hit the down switch. So I'm guessing it's just the down relay going bad....sweet.

So with some help of this thread:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...osting-204178/

Thanks Kiyobrown! Haha

Anyways, so the code is G254 which according to

http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

Means I have 8" diffs
3.90 gears... no wonder I lost power?
and 4 pinion open diff.

What does 4 pinion mean? Sorry, I'm pretty new to this kind of stuff, learning as I go.

But if I get lower gears I'll lose some gas mileage right? And I'm already at about 13, sometimes 14. It's horrible. Why is that? And that was was with the 28's I had on there before.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

So... I figured out that the truck is missing. So it's more like a v5 then a v6. Don't ask me why I didn't know that before. I'm a "noobie" And you could notice it a lot more with the new exhaust. Yes, I got a new exhaust.

Anyways, here's some pics!

Flowmaster 40 series. Sounds awesome!

Had my dads friend of a long time put it in, he does really good work.

Got rid of the cat. Made it run better even though a plug or a wire is not connected right.

Left the tail pipe on, because it was in great shape. Got a new chrome tip to finish it off. Sweet.

When I replaced my window motor....it was..unpleasant. Got it done though.

And when I was installing the clear corners.

Anyways, so that explains the lack of power. So I'll update you guys when I get it fixed.

It's not to loud. but it sounds good. It's pretty throaty sounding. It actually sounds a lot different then my brothers in his 1992 pick up. I think it's perfect.

I bet it sounds great with the flowmaster. Some people love them, some hate them. I have had quite a few on various vehicles over the years and like the way they sound. Sometimes the in cab drone would get to me on the highway.. keep up the good work.

I would do a simple tune up and see if you can fix your miss and get some better mileage. Plugs wires cap rotor fuel filter air filter....simple stuff like that. You might not need gears if its just running like crap. But gears would definetly help you pull through the hills but be prepared to spend $$$$ and id put a locker in the rear if your going to that extent.
