Gizler00's 91 Reg Cab 4x4 Build

So...... I decided to make some changes in my life as my boys are now getting old enough to do some outdoor sports. I bought them both a JR50 that they could ride around on our property. As some of you may know, I used to have quite a few bikes in the past. I reluctantly sold my KTM when these guys were born to purchase tires for our tahoe and take a break from riding to raise the two monkeys......

Well now......Im literally the only one without a dirtbike in the family! They are always bugging me now to get another one so I can chase them when they ride. I really put a lot of thought into this and quickly realized that If they were a little older, they could enjoy the 4runner more than they do now. But at this current time, they would enjoy me having a Dirtbike even more.

So.......I put my $runner up for dale a few months ago with no bites, and recently had it up again and there was some interest here and there, but no one would commit to coming over and checking it out.

Some of you might remember one of my former students that had the 91 Toyota pickup that we found in Missouri and did some work to it a the school. Well.....He always wanted my 4runner and knew that 3rg gens were my favorite bodystyle, PLUS.........He he also had an 04 YZ250!!

Long story short.........In exchange for my Runner, I got a 1991 Regular Cab 4x4 22re , BL spacer lift, Truck cap, and a Stock 04 YZ250. Its kind of funny, but the Truck sweetened the deal. I had all intentions of parting with toyotas for awhile and just focusing on a dirtbike.

But the Stars must have aligned and realized that the Toyota runs deep in my blood and I couldn't possibly be without one!

So here are the goods.

So the Truck........

We pulled the Engine and put a Timing kit in, Water Pump, Oil Pump, HG and Head Bolts. She burns some oil, and I am suspect that it has a similar issue that my old engine did with bad valve guides and seals. Just dumping oil into the cylinders.

My Plans for now are to:

Install the BL spacer lift this week
Get some 15x8 or 15x9 rims
33x12.50x15's
E-Locker for the rear
Some kind of lunchbox locker or spool for the front
Maybe 4.88 gears

I essentially want it to look like this one I found a picture of online

Im going to Rock the IFS for a while and build a solid axle that I have in the shop in the meantime. Then SAS it someday when I get the funds and willpower to do so.

Thanks for reading guys.
Pretty excited about this!!

Hey Mark! Thats cool that you got another toyota as part trade, looks to be in great shape, almost the same color as your 4 runner. I'm sure you'l put your touches on it and have it the way you want in no time. The bike looks really nice as well, looks like you came out the best of both worlds, congratulations, look forward to following your build thread!

This thing has a low profile toolbox in it. I have always been one to never put a toolbox in a truck. Especially a non 8' bed truck. But I decided to give this one a shot, and much to my surprise, I love it so far!! I can keep the cab clean of everything I would typically carry tool wise.

I I still ultimately want a 3rd gen ex-cab 22re. That's kind of the best of both worlds. But this will hold me over for a lon time!!

Loving it

Made some weekend temporary repairs. The oil pressure sender harness was broken and the guage was dead and the body ground at the battery was broken.

So I made some temporary band aids until I can make an actual repair at work this week.

I I really forgot how much I love these 3rd gens!!

Great looking truck you got. Back in the day a YZ was a two stroke motor and I really liked those bikes. Not sure if an 04 is still two stroke and has the power band in it. I wish we had a place to ride bikes with the kiddos. You will have a great time with them on the trails.

The 89-95 had a Steering Relay Rod recall on them. About 5 years ago I got a notice from Toyota that a truck I had, was not replaced. I would run it to Toyota and see if they are still honoring the recall and see if the upgrade has been done. Looking forward to your build.

Hey Terry! Thanks for the Compliments on the Truck!

The 2004 YZ 250 is still a 2-stroke. Yamaha is still one of the only Jap manufacturers that makes a current production 250 2-stroke to this day. I have had about a dozen of these things in the last 25 years. Great bikes, and not much has changed.

Thanks for the heads up on the steering recall. I will have to make some calls and look into it.

Ordered new Upper Ball joints that should be here tomorrow. I am hoping to get the BL spacer lift on by Thursday.

I've been looking into getting some new 15x8" steel black wheels and 33's to compliment the lift when its done.

The '91 is great looking. Where did you find a Yamaha with training wheels?

Finally got rid of the halo lights that were cracked and leaking.
I like the idea of having an H4 style light, but I decided to go back to a sealed beam in the meantime until I can save up some $$ for a nice set of conversion lights.

back in 2014, when my student owned the truck, the synchro's went out in his w56, so I found an older tip shift for a steal and we put it in.

Well we we had to hack up the floor a little. I never noticed until the other day, that the floor was leaking water as a result.

Off came the carpet.

Since I was short on time, I decided to slap some paint on it so it wouldn't rust and finish it in a few days.

Heres the semi-finished product.

My upper ball joints finally came in yesterday, so I'm hoping to put those on this next week.

Few more things I want to do before winter completely hits.

New carpet
15x8 rims
33's
drivers window regulator
Fix rust above fender wells on bed. (This is top priority)
Shocks to go with the BS lift

Very cool! I was a little worried when I read you were selling your 4Runner, I loved that thing and reading about your build.

Nice bike, and nice truck!

What did you do on your last motor for this / what are you planning on doing for this engine?

Thanks for the compliments!

I I was not going to give the 4Runner to just anyone. He's a former student and a good friend. He's going to take care of it.

I think im going to build an engine while I drive this one. I might go a similar route as my last.

.040 overbore
engnbldr cam
all new bearings
pistons

and Just go through and replace everything.

And when it's ready, I'll drop it in.

Love it Gizler. It's kinda funny you want an ex cab. I only say that b/c I'd like a single cab as a project someday (like Teuf, ToyoToler, Scuba). Guess I should get my current rig done first eh?

Aha! Found your new build thread. Sweet. You know... I happen to have that machined block, crank, pistons, and everything else just sitting in my basement with no plans of using it in the foreseeable future. Looking back I shouldn't have spent my money on that cuz the 4runner still runs just fine! Let me know if you're interested bud. Hope to see you Nov 19th!

Your patch panel turned out great. It would of been nice if Toyota would of kept all the shifters in the same area.

That is pretty funny. I really dont need an Ex-cab, but I like to have the extra room behind the seat for tools and other odds and ends. I love that they have the storage compartments on the floor and in the side panels. I used to have chains and tow straps in the base of my old one, and a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit in the side panels. They there is no need to have a tool box in the bed.

Thanks for the compliments!

Hey Buddy!! We will have to get together and talk about the engine. I would definitely be interested.

Thanks Terry! I still need to get back in there and grind the welds down, smooth it out and properly finish and paint it. I also want to get new carpet as well.

Started cutting out the rust on the drivers bedside. I want to get this thing as rust free as I can.

Heres where I started.

I decided to put a small patch in on the left smaller Hole.

After looking at how bad the lip was underneath, I decided to cut the entire section out.

After a long talk with My Coworker at my other job (autobody Program at the local community college), he talked me into bringing it in and letting the students tackle the entire bed. So they removed it last night, started to make a patch panel for the section I cut out. They also started stripping the areas down where there was more rust, and some dents.
