bruno4turbo 1986 pickup build up thread

just to get it out of the way, Turbo is just the name that stuck, my truck factory came with the turbo, but sadly it was long gone when I bought it
Turbo came with new tires (32/10.5/15) and wheels (powder coated black steel, with mock-locks... not my choice but they look fine), and a 5" rough country suspension lift included. auto tranny, power locks and windows. has sun/moon roof. up graded sound system I'll post some pics so you can have brands. my buddy installed it, personally a little lost about sound systems.
when I first bought him I:
new battery $60
new alternator (power steering leak fried the first one) FREE
plugs wires rotor cap. (for preventative maintenance, he was running fine when i bought him, but 26yr old stuff was questionable.) $60

months later:
blew the head. engine was previously rebuilt. the head was "fixed" in a way that caused irreparable damage, causing a horrible exhaust leak on the 3 and 4 cyl. the #4 cyl is the one that blew at a water jacket. I didn't save many pictures of the build but i'll get the ones I have left up. bought new (not rebuilt, shiny new) head, and full HD gasket set, multi-layer steel head gasket. $350

most recent... about a month after the head.

seems to be that i drowned my transmission, and diffs. front main seal suddenly leaking quite bad. working on pulling the tranny currently, gonna get pics up asap. my current "questions" page (at least what i've come to call it...) is 86 pickup 4x4 auto transmission please help. that's up to date on everything so far.

no don't get paid again until the 15th so i can't buy the seal, or fluids until that weekend :'( but i've gotten everything drained. my friend helped me the last 2 nights. its going to be kinda hard to drop it since the book says to take apart the front axle. but i think with the 4" lift i have i probably can get away with not... but I'm not sure yet.. mostly I only get to play the waiting game

I have no doubt you can do it!! Sucks you have to wait.
I had to wrestle my 2006 ford e350 trans in by myself while my workers finished a job in a rental van. I feel for ya.

So...everything reek of burned trans fluid? Its terrible isnt it?
With my mach eating 4 transmissions in 2 years...my garage reeked
for years.

Never...never...use the bellhousing bolts to pull the trans back to the engine.
It should pop on and be flush before you bolt it up. Make sure torque converter is full seated when you pop it in. wiggle it...rotate it...till it goes in as far as possible.

I was sitting in a lawn chair in my garage with a broken ankle one day helping some freinds with a motor install. I couldnt get under the car.
They were having issues getting the auto trans in. Genius's despite my warnings...used the bolts to pull trans to engine. 5 seconds later I heard a
"tink" Pause..."tink" The block cracked from the bolt holes to the starter on one side....bolt hole to oilpan rail on other side. Instant oil leak.

They left the pilot bearing in the crank from the motor, which was in a manual trans car. Doh!!!

Umm this post caught my eye. Are you saying that the book tells you to disassemble the front axle to remove the tranny? If so that's a first for me. I've never removed a front end to swap a tranny or remove a tranny. Anyone else ever here of this. Sorry in advance if I'm misunderstanding your post.

that's what I thought. but here's the shortened list from the book

1. disconnect neg battery cable
2. drain cooling system, remove top coolant hose, remove fan shroud
3. remove air cleaner assebly, disconnect throttle cable
4.remove upper starter mounting bolt
5. raise vehicle support on jacks
6.drain tranny
7.disconnect wiring
8. remove starter
9. remover driveshaft(s). on 4WD remover the front driveraxles
etc...

That's a bunch of bologna. Removing battery cables is a good idea. Removing throttle cable...... Nah don't have to do that.

All you need to do is listed below in a pretty good order.

Chalk tires
Remove driveshafts
Remove starter
Remove dust cover
Remove all torque converter bolts
Lower crossmember
Unplug all wires/cables
Place jack under tranny
Good idea to strap tranny to jack
Unbolt all Bellhousing bolts
Slide tranny back and lower jack
Drag out from under truck

That's pretty much it
Installation is reverse
I may have missed something but you get the idea. You shouldn't even have to jack your truck up. I have BJ spacers In front and I've never jacked up my truck to remove tranny but its whatever makes you comfortable.

no i have the haynes repair manual from autozone.. my dad got it for me as a new truck gift when I bought my truck. for the most part its useful but yea I figured that was bs. and I was just gonna dig into my redneck side and make it come off lol. but yea thanks Toyota~boy for the list. I have most of that done already, I'm going to wait for a friend of mine this weekend to help drop it, i'm not gonna kid myself and risk injury by doing it alone, I'm not nearly as strong as a guy, and extra eyes and hands help in keeping me from hurting myself or my truck.
