Talking 1992 Yota SAS 350SBC

Hey guys
New to yotatech so here goes nothing
During the summer i stumbled upon a 1992 toyota pickup in southern ontario for sale.
the truck was listed with:
- trail gear SAS with fj80 front axle
-ARB air lockers front and back
-38" super swamper boggers
-350 small block chevy from a 1993 police interceptor (9c1)
-stock toyota manual transmission and transfer case
-advance adapters bell housing and clutch assembly
-painless wiring harness
-rust free
-bobbed rear
-longfield axleshafts
this was all listed for 5000$

I ended up buying the truck without tires or custom bumpers for 3800$
as far as i am concerned a wicked deal considering sas and air lockers already in, aswell as the 350 sbc.
I Knew the motor smoked a bit but as it turned out it needed to be swapped. an easy job and themotors are a dime a dozen.
I chose to buy without the tires because they were not what i wanted anyways. as well as ditched the bumpers because I make custom bumpers and these ones didn't fit the bill.

I will post some pictures soon.
I have recently upgraded the front bumper to aluminum, installed my winch and 36" super swampers aswell as some small upgrades to the dash .
plans for the truck include
-custom chase rack
-new gear sets
-possibly marlin doubler or something along those lines
basically 4 low just isn't low enough currently
-aswell as some 37" bfg km2 or krawlers
- linex dark forest green paint job and some other suprise custom mods

Pictures of build and mods

When i first got it I threw a friends 35" thornbirds and a aluminum shell bumper on to get driving it down the road
Installed an aluminum dash piece for light switches. Oil pressure guage and water temp guage.
Had to throw in my satalite radio aswell.
The truck has air bags in the front to keep the springs from sagging (previous owner install)

Heres a picture of the 350 squeezed in.
The batteries are in the back to make more room under the hood. All accesory wiring is done inside an ammo can under the hood.

Heres a picture of the front bumper complete before paint.
I also smashed my door abd rocker that day.
Rock sliders were soon to follow

" />Heres a picture of the rock sliders finished up this weekend.
They are made from 2x2x1/4 hss tubing
And 1.66 round pipe 1/8 wall.
Cross pieces are 1" round 1/8 wall

Nice looking truck!

Can you post some pictures of and talk a little bit about the front axle? Specifically leaf spring mounts and steering? I've heard that swapping in fj80 front axles can be a chore.

Heres the only picture. I can get more details but as i said before i bought it already sas'd but can get measurments. Hell it might not ecen be an 80 axle. It is a highpinion and parts i bought for it fit. It is a trail gear sas.

Thanks for the picture. It kinda looks like an early mini truck axle with a fj80 diff, but someone did quite a bit of work on it. Either way, you have a nice setup there.

Progress for winter

Finally got myself a garage and got it to my liking.
pulled the truck in to begin the tear down.
someone else did alot of the work on this truck and some isnt quite up to my Standards and also want to double check alot of stuff.
 f

pulled the front axle and stearing components.

upgrading to 5.29 Gears and cleaning up the axle aswell as some new seals etc.
Heavy battery cable coming from the back.
Isolated through fender.
Has somr corrosion around it aswell.

Fenders showing some signs of rust. Bettr take care of it.

Pulled both fenders to clean up underneath ( super simple to take on and off.
Pulled to do some body work and prep for paint.
New drivers side fender was 60$ so went ahead and ordered that

Whipped up a new rad support at work one day.
Used my TMR customs dimple die set.
Its given me an idea for a backrack/chase rack/ roof rack/batterybox/toolbox.

dogs not impressed with the wet EVERYTHING. Pressure washing inside was nasty.

Update to the build

After waiting and waiting my new gears came in so off to the shop they went. Shop went to install them and found that G2 boxed the wrong gears! O ordered the proper part number but they sent a 29 spline front pinion reverse cut instead of 27.
infuriating considering theyre pretty well special order.

tried out 4 wheel parts burlington to order my tires

40 DAYS LATER THEY SHOWED UP
after all that BS and some other small things i fixed up aswell as a front rebuild kit for the axle and some new seals in the rear.

Here she is.. Went with burnt copper accents Rock slidrrs and bumpers are line x coated
37 x 12 x 15 super swamper sx2 is the tire of choice

Pair of black oak 10w led pods to finish it off

I believe you are correct, it does look like an 84-85 mini truck axle with a high pinion third. The bottom truss on the 80 is shaped differently from what i remember.

Either way good score for what you paid for it.
