Sayota's 85 Build Up
So this is gonna be the build up/fixing of my 85 Pickup sr5 4x4
I bought the truck a little over a week ago for $1000. I personally think I got a good deal. It's got a 22re, 190k and supposedly 30k on a rebuild (don't have papers so it anyone's guess if that's true). The major problem is the 4th gear synchro is bad. Working on getting another transmission since I will probably take mine apart and not know how to put it back together.
The previous owner hit a guard rail which caused some body damage and really messed up the back bumper ( not sure how it happened).
Spent the next couple of hours taking the bumper off
The brackets were nicely twisted and bent various ways
One side of the frame suffered some damage
Anyone know how to take off a spare tire?
How she currently sits
I'm currently working on getting a transmission and some tires so that's the next thing scheduled to happen. I'm very excited to how my first build is gonna go!

Looks like you got a solid truck to start with. If your tire carrier is frozen up, you can start soaking it down with some PB Blaster, it is a slow process but it should eventually break loose. If you are wanting to get the complete assembly down to work with it a little easier, some have 3 bolts and some have 4 bolts that hole the carrier to the cross member. You will probably need to tilt the bed to get access with them with the tire still in the carrier.
Great looking little truck you got a with some work you can get it to where you want it to be. Welcome to Yotatech.

So today I was really in the mood to do something so I started taking stuff apart. I took out everything in the interior except for the dash
I was very pleased to see that the floor isn't in that bad of condition. There's a little rust but I'll probably leave it alone for now
I decided I'm gonna put bed liner on the floor
I got a little carried away and ended up with the door and fender off but they needed to come off anyway
Having trouble deciding on some tires? Any suggestions? If I had just a little more money this could go some much easier but you can't get everything you want.

Thanks for the suggestion bootscoot. (Your build is pretty sweet) My dad showed my a website that sells stupid cheap retreads so I might take that route

I finally found a transmission that I'll hopefully be getting on Monday. It's $350 and comes with a transfer case. Dual cases maybe? Figured I'd clean the seats while they were out of the truck and I'm surprised how clean they came out
If the trans is good then I'll work on that and then get my tires, door, fender and then I'm good to go!

Nice project. I see you don't let a little snow deter you.
I like Discount Tire. They always have free shipping and I know I got a $80 rebate Visa card when I got a set of four Cooper Discoverers. They run that promo twice a year. I like that tire for all terrain. They are quiet and so far decent in snow. They have a 55,000 mile warranty. Do your research on recaps. There have been some stories. I was behind a Jeep on the expressway that threw a cap last year. They're probably okay off road or around town.

Found some doors and a transmission on Craigslist. The doors came off a 87 2wd and they're in amazing condition.
Got the passenger door and fender off
I think the new doors look really good. Hopefully I'll can get the transmission in soon. There's not much left to do until it's road worthy again. The guy I got the doors from is a big Toyota guy so he might buy my bad transmission off of me. He's got a w56 with the reverse out so he wants mine for parts.

I order my bed liner for the interior. If you're looking to get bed liner I would recommend doing it now because it's $6 a can on amazon

Ugh
Well this didn't work out.
For the most part getting the trans out was fine
Got everything I needed
Original trans is out
Oil pan bolts got over tightened and was leaking
Now for the problem.
Correct me if I'm wrong but my truck had a w56a which is also compatible with a w56b. Now I believe the trans I bought is a w56c which has forward shift instead top shift. I've read that the w56c will bolt up fine and be fully functional but you have to cut the floor to accommodate for the shifters being a good 4-5 inches farther forward. Any advise? Should I continue the search for another trans or just cut the floor
w56a on left w56c on right

Leaks
My cab officially has a leak. I have a pretty good idea where it is but you never know until you dig into it. There's almost constantly a small puddle of water in the far corner of the drivers side floor pan. I figured it was just some snow from my boots or something but unfortunately when I pulled the kick panel I discovered soaked insulation and a nice trail of water. Its times like these were I question my decision to buy the truck but then I just look at at it and think "Yeah it was probably worth it"

Leak located and fixed!
I found the leak. Once I removed the cowling and windshield trim and found that there's little to no rust and the cowling. The leak was coming from a grommet that seals the cable for the hood release to the firewall. It was a pain to out back in but definitely worth it
I'm a little worried about that crack to the right of the cable

Toyota has so many different transmissions it is hard to keep track of. I am thinking you may have a G series transmission. If I am correct, the EFI get the W series and the carbed trucks get the G series. I put a W series in mine and had to trim about an inch of the floor board to make it work. Instead of spending several hundred dollars for the correct transmission I just trimmed the floor board. It was a transmission that I had made it work. That is what I would do if I was in your shoes.
